View Full Version : Brownlee cats
I fished Brownlee several years ago while camping at Farewell Bend and I am finally heading back over the 4th of July for a much anticipated return. Back then, our boat was not so reliable so we stayed pretty close to the launch. Several guys came back from some place down river with coolers full of catfish. Well, fortunately times have changed and I have a boat that can handle an extended trip. Does anyone know where they might have been going? We heard of several people down somewhere, but I just don't remember if they mentioned some place in particular.
Thank you for the help.

Crappie Chaser, a local guide for Brownlee who spends a lot of time on the Powder River arm took me out last year to an area he called the flats. If you look on a map of the Powder arm you can see this. It's not far from the launch at Hewitt. Anyway, he watched the bottom for channels and his fish finder and we got a lot of fish from about 7:20Am to about 11AM off the flats. It's a shallow expanse of murky water apparently loaded with catfish. The fish seemed to be in or around the underwater ditchworks and readily ate cutbait. I brought home two coolers filled with catfish and crappie, but as to where the guys you mentioned got those fish, it really could be anywhere. That whole area is good for cats right now. Fish early and at dusk. I have look closer to the bank at dusk, bobberfishing with glowbobbers and worms. Good luck!

Powder River arm is great, Hewitt park is the place.
Man,when we went.We stay on the floating docks(shannys)along the river.(TAKE WHAT YOU BROUGHT!!!)Just us COYOTES and the stars and fished allnight long.We shoot out floating lights on the water, looks like a swimming pool.Big crappie, lots of cats, Big cats!!!In the day time we'd fish rock walls all the way out to the mouth.(to left of ramp)or fish the flats for cats.(to right of ramp)The powder river dumps in at the edge of flats, the channel cats seem to like the little current,we use crappie parts and prawn.
Awsome fresh water fishing.Never mind about the wild trout you didnt ask about those monsters!!!(Real heart pumpers!!!)
Makes me want to go!!!

Keb, head down river from Farewell Bend and you'll see a big rock in the middle of the river. Fish in that area. Crappie makes good bait and I like to go to safeway and buy some trout to bring a long as well. Haven't been to that side of the state for a couple of years and miss it.
Good luck and have fun.
I've been fishing Farewell Bend area and up by Woodhead Campground regularly, you should have no problem catching fish of all sorts from the Farewell Bend area. You can use pretty much anything from crankbaits, jigs or bait. The fishing is just that easy. Nothing beats throwing a crankbait and catching a 14" crappie, 3lb bass and then a 9 lb Blue Catfish on just 3 casts. I'll be at Woodhead campground on the 4th of July weekend chasing big crappie myself.

Don't want to be a bummer but just got back from the powder and thing are slow. Got a safty check and the cop said that he has never seen it this slow at this time of year. The water is high. The brush on the flats are half under water.
Saturday night there was about 10 boats and I only know of 3 cats. Crappie for us was here and their but mosty their. The ones we did get were nice,10"-11"
Now for the flip side, The weather was changeing as we left and has been good all week it might change things.
