Friend of mine just bought a 2005 9.9 (light weight) Mercury four stroke motor. I noticed the tag says Made In Japan on it. Are these made by Yamaha?

I think these are made by Tohatsu/Nissan. They are good motors from what I hear.
I heard they were made by Yamaha. You probably can compare the specs and figure it out.

When I shopped for a an 8 or 9.9 Merc 4 stroke, I was told that they were Tohatsu OEM. It may be true that the larger outboards use Yamaha powerheads.
I would think Boat Doc can confirm.

The current model 8 and 9.9 are tohatsu, sanchon motors(spelling?)makes the 15 and also the 75,90,115 and 225 for yamaha and mercury. mercury makes their own 30 thru 60 and verado products.

Boat Doc,
Just curious if the Sanchon? Motors that are built for Merc and Yami are the same,or are they built to different specs? We always hear the Debate of which motor is best.Could the answer be both?

The 75, 90,115 models are black yamaha powerheads. the 225 is a black yamaha. look for mercury to build their own in the next two years.
