I need some opinions. I will be buying a 15` Smokercraft Alaskan. I am thinking of upgrading the motor from the 15hp. to the 25hp. ML Bigfoot.
Do you guys think this motor is too much? I am concerned that th 15hp. might not be enough motor. I plan on doing it all with this boat, trolling, anchor fishing, ect. What do you think?

Just do it! I owned a 15' Smokercraft alaskan for several years. I upgraded to that same motor...25hp 4-stroke EFI Big foot. I can tell you that you will kick yourself later if you don't.
The extra power and speed will come in handy when you need it. Just do it!!! Good luck.:smash:

I also started out with a 15' smokercraft. I had a evinrude 35. I thought it was just right. I'm sure the newer 25's will work. 15 seems a litle underpowered if you're fishing the rivers.

I have a 25HP fourstroke yamaha on my 15' and it works great. Not as fast as the 2 stroke I got rid of last year but the 4 stroke trolls so much better and is a lot quieter. With just me in the boat the new 4 stroke will move me right along about 29mph.

We have a 15' Alaskan also and started out with a 15 horse. After a couple of years we upped it to a 25. We get 28-30mph and love it. The 15 just wasn't big enough. And the 25 trolls down just fine.

I have a 15' alaskan w/25 yam 4st. I do not like it. I also have a 15 johnson 2st they are both the same speed. The 4 is alright when alone. Also trolls to fast when in lakes or no current.I've also tried various other props to no avail. It might just be my style of operation. When loaded w/decoys and 1 other guy she wont get on a plane. Also has trouble pulling anchor /ball in lots of current. Motor runs awsome otherwise.Make sure you get elet. stant and power tilt and trim well worth the extra cash.Motors are heavy. center of gravity is also lower and farther back than the 2 making it harder to tilt yet. good luck with your choise

I have a 15 SMOKER CRAFT ALASKAN SS with a 1995 25 Horse Mercury long shaft 2 stroke. The boat is fast and gets up on a plane just fine. It will not troll down to a usable speed for me so I run my Min Kota electric for that. My boat says on the plate that I can run up to a 40 horse motor. For me this 25 seems too fast. Want to trade motors? Sent me a private E mail. Mine is in mint condition. Best of luck. This is a sweet boat.
