I'm getting mixed reviews by sales people (Imagine that) One dealer sells both Honda and Yamaha and swears the Honda is better. (3yr bumper to bumper vs Yami 3yr limited) I have also heard (read) on this forum problems with the Honda not gearing down well for trolling. My question is for a 22ft sled :whazzup:w/496 engine (heavy) would you go Honda or Yamaha and 9.9 or 15 horse??? Mostly rivers and some lake use. Thanks in advance. Mtnsilverwolf

I have a 23ft. Woolridge 8.6ft wide, w/460 built to 385 HP. I went from a 9.9 Yamaha high thrust to an 8 HP Yamaha high thrust with electric start and power trim. It has been a great motor and pushes me just great. Many times I have six people in the boat and have no complaints in trolling speed or holding in current while back trolling. I like the electric start and it keeps the batteries charged. The 8HP hight thrust Yamaha is probably the number one choice in trolling motor for guides. I think both Yamaha and Honda are great, but I would go Yamaha 8HP high thrust with electric start and power trim. There was a good discussion on this subject in the past month on Ifish. You might do a search and look at the posts on this same subject. Lots of luck in your search.

I'm getting a new Merc 9.9 high thrust kicker with electric tilt then they come in in June. It has a four blade prop that is pitched for our kind of fishing here in the NW. Give Tyrone Parmelee a call at the Milwaukie Steven's Marine store 1-800-652-1444, he will give you all the specs on this fine kicker. BTW my current 9.9 Merc is running great but I need the electric tilt. Good luck to you.

Honda and Yamaha are both good products. I think the Yamaha 8 would be the best match.

Nearly all of merc's four stroke power heads are from Yamaha. I suspect this will be the case with their new 9.9 four stroke.
