I have a 1983 volvo penta 350ci motor in a fiberform, even after the motor is warmed up it seems to hesitate and want to back fire out the carb, is this a carberation issue? or could it be ignition? I have tried adjusting the carb and didn't work. Is the carb shot? It used to run fine till that one day and never ran good after that. I am lost so any suggestions would be great.
thank you
I am not familiar with this engine, but I would check the points in the distributor. They could be pitted or not adjusted correctly. As other engines I have had experince with show this as the problem. And that would cause the trouble you describe. :flowered:

It could be that the timing advance isnt working right. Our old Preadtor with a 502 started running bad and spit back through the carb. We rebuilt the carb and it still did it. Then I noticed that the mechanical advance in the distibutor was a little rusty. Cleaned it up and the engine ran fine.
You may also want to check the plug wires. If one goes bad it will run that way.
Lots of things can cause the problems you are explaining. Check the easy cheap fixes first.

Based on the age of your boat, a carb rebuilt is probably in order. I had the same problem with a 1987 boat after about ten years. Rebuilt the carb problem went away. I was lucky as I had a very good friend who is a master tech and he loves to go fishing. My cost was for parts only. It could also be ignition, but based on my experience and the age of your boat-I would start with the carb.

well never touch a carb , without a tuneup first. Check timing , dwell point , new condenser plugs rotar. Then check carbs acceleration pump and filters. Sounds like she's starving.

Check the coil also while you're at it.

Might try replacing fuel filter. Should be done as PM anyway.

Sounds like a timing issue.
