I'll be heading over to camp at Hell's Canyon Res. in two weeks. No WAIT! That'd only be about 12 days now! Man I've got a lot of stuff to get ready. Anyway... As some of you may have heard me snivel this winter, I've never caught a crappie on purpose. I know that sounds pathetic, but I'd really like to give it a good try this year. I'm not familiar at all with Brownlee other than that I know the "Powder river arm" isn't too far of a drag for us to hit it for a day. Can anyone offer up or PM me some good GPS numbers for where to go, and what depth/technique I should try? I'd be more than happy to reciprocate for Klamath Basin advice. Any other Ifishers going to be hanging out over that way between the 15th and 21st? Wouldn't mind swapping lies over a beer if so.

Honestly you don't need GPS numbers, and the schools move around anyway. Fish off points and in coves pitching roadrunners and curly tailed jigs. Use crappie nibbles for flavor. I do best toward the upper end of the lake. Powder River arm, up toward Mountain Man Lodge, and around the Cemetary.

Mojo has told it well . The gps numbers will only put back where the school of fish was at the last time that you fished . Watch your depth finder and when you see fish stop , and fish at that depth . Turn off the fish id . It will give you false fish that arn't there more times than not .

WOW, that a heck of a boat drag for you!
No crappie closer? Don't you have some pretty good lakes down there?
Try these spots...
1. Around pumps just above where the creek comes in a Copperfield Park (CP).
2. Down river from CP theres a boat launch, try coves at both ends.
3. Down river from CP theres a tunnel for the road, try cove at far end. (a little camping spot there too.)
If you get bored with that drag the boat above Oxbow dam and put in at the next launch and fish the coves in the Oxbow pool.
BTW, does everyone know there a nice little hot spring right across from that launch?? It's got a 8x8x3ft pool. Nice & warm! AND Very relaxing. Sooths the arm & back muscles after a hard day of casting bass plugs!
I don't think it's a big secret, but many may not know it's there. It's about 300yds up the draw with a nice shallow cove in front. I mean it's right across from the launch. Look for the white spot on the hillside.
Pure heaven! :angel1:
Well I hope that gets you started.
Let us all know how it goes.

Iv'e never heard of anyone using gps numbers for crappie on Brownlee, Maybe for ice fishing. If your going to hells canyon res. chances are you will be going thru Richland, &
Brownlee is right there. Mini jigs, & twister tails work well, as does small repallas, & basically anything small will work, spinners/plugs/spoons/Iv'e even caught them on flies at times, this time of year is hard to go wrong, just look for other fishermen, chances are you won't be alone, & most people are willing to share spots & methods, but unfortunately with the invasion of commercial fishing Asians, some folks are reluctant to share info, can't say I blame them(the state really needs to address this issue), if they don't put a size, & number limit, eventually this awesome fishery will be a thing of the past, of course the Asians are not the only ones, But I heard they sell Crappie, & catfish to fish markets, this needs to stop!!!, Anyway good luck fishing.

I have been wanting to mention the Asian issue for awhile but thought it might be to racial for this board.. However, since you brought it up...
It does need addressed... Yes they are Asians.. and yes they are commercial fishing. They are already there.. have about two miles of shoreline staked out on the Oregon side. Most are from Washington state.. Puget sound area. I don't know where they sell these fish.. but its only too obvious thats what they are doing.. Saw some last year towing a seine net between two boats.. Thats just B.S and I can't believe the fish and game has not hammered them for it. The lake won't run out of crappie.. Its the trash and nasty camping that goes on in the area that they have staked out.. Its really quite disgusting and has bothered me for some time..
Not a slam on Asians, good folks etc etc etc.. But this large group just happens to be all Asian and its got to stop.

If you launch at woodhead park on Brownlee there are a couple of good holes straight cross from there on the Oregon side. Fish the points in 15-25' of water right on the bottom. A red/white tube tipped with a crappie nibble seems to work the best for me. Cast out and allow the jig to sink with an open bail. SLOWLY retrieve it. Watch the slack in your line for the bite, as alot of times you won't be able to feel it. Good Luck!

I realize that crappie school and move, so gps numbers won't really put you into the fish. What they would do for me however is let me see the exact kind of conditions where they have been caught in the past, and some likely spots to look for them as I'm totally unfamiliar with Brownlee. I will do as all have suggested. I have never seen crappie nibbles though, so hopefully they'll have them locally. I'll definately let everyone know how we did. With pix hopefully.

Crappie nibblets are just another form of powerbait, & just about any powerbait will work at times, I only use powerbait when needed, sometimes it makes a difference, sometimes not. Brownlee is the longest reservoir in Oregon
& you really need to put some time in to find your favorite spot(s) There is a good cove on the Idaho side where Brownlee creek comes in, only about 12 miles from Hells canyon res. GOOD LUCK!!!
