Just got back from Puerto Vallarta and a much anticipated bass fishing trip to Cajon de Pena. Well, the trip wasn't the greatest :depressed:, but since PV is such a common destination for Mexican vacations, I wanted to pass on what I learned. The lake is about 7000 acres and just under 2 hours SE of PV and at this time there are only a couple of companies that guide on it, Via Mar and Charter Dreams. I would probably try Charter Dreams next time as our Via Mar guide made us take a cab to meet him in town, put us in a 14' aluminum boat with no trolling motor and proceeded to wind drift down the banks while he joined us fishing. :bigshock: I think he does better on his saltwater charters. We didn't catch many fish mostly because we hit it just at the end of the dry season and the water was down a good 30 feet and falling. I would, however really like to go back and fish it at a higher level with the structure I could see being under water. It looked like it could be really good. Anyway, not a bad day trip since the alternative was shopping with our wives and I think that there's a lot of potential there.

Thanks for the report. I have been invited to fish in Mexico a couple of times but have never been able to get time off to go.

The people who have invited me say Dec. and Jan. are the best times to go. Someday I hope to get down there!

They have had a couple of bad experiences with outfitters down there also. But now they have a great outfitter that takes extremely good care of them for a 4 day trip. I can't remember what lake or outfitter they fished with this winter at this time, but if you head back, send me a pm, and I will get the info so you can hire a good one next time.

So what did you catch ??? I was telling you awhile back about my freinds who went there and the guides shot a sheep and put it in the boat with them for the rest of the day. How many hours and at what time of the day were you there ?? They were bummed that they left early and did not get to fish the best hours of the day..But did catch some nice fish.

Rebell, I appreciate the help with guides, I'll talk to you if the opportunity arises again. So far I've just done a couple of day trips in Mexico (this one and El Salto) and would definately do a multi day package at a lakeside lodge from now on.
Anyway, we were quite disappointed that the guide was unable to put us on sheep :depressed: and the bass fishing wasn't much better. We fished from 7:00 until 3:00 and caught 4 fish in the 2-3 lb range. I didn't feel like it was going to get better toward evening and the wind was starting to whip up pretty good, so we were pretty happy to leave. The lake record is 13 and we heard that 7 and 8's are fairly common. They said we shoulda been there last week....story of my life  we caught our fish cranking, but gave senkos and spinnerbaits a legitimate effort. I think another guide might have found fish and a better boat with a trolling motor might have opened up different water. In his defense, he said the water was so low he would have got stuck in the mud trying to launch a bigger boat. What bothered me was that he fished the entire time, instead of trying to keep us in position.

I once did a three day package at Hueties(sp). We flew into Los Mochis and were driven to and from the lake. The drive was 3 hours each way. The resort we stayed at was a very nice 4 star accomodation and the food was great. The tequila never stopped flowing. We were treated good and the guides, using 16 foot alum boats with 30 hp outboards &trolling motors, really knew how to put us on the fish. For me, it was a once in a lifetime trip.
