Is there a way to try to start a jet engine and pump without it being in the water? I think I remember reading that the pump needs to have water.
Is there a hose hook up that would work?
Is it safe to just turn it over a couple of revolutions?

Don't do it unless you want to become more familiar with the term "spun bearing".

I have taken my pump apart, so there are no impellers or any of the cutless bearings still in place, then connected water to the water intake and started the engine (briefly, only very briefly) at idle RPM to make sure it ran. Don't know if I would recommend it, but it is doable. The problem is that there are rubber cutless bearings that must be water lubricated - in fact they should be immersed in water - or they will freeze up or score the chrome sleeves they run on. Easiest thing is to get it in the water if at all possible.

Kodiak makes a run kit where a hose fitting is in the clean out and a plate is installed over the intake. They say this will allow the pump to be ran. I myself think it is much safer and probably easier to take it to the ramp, but if you live somewhere up north where the water is frozen half the year than that's an option.
That Kodiak run dry kit cost $350 and I am told that it does a so... so job getting water to the right places. It really it a better idea to run it wet and not have to worry.
