I had my boat out yesterday and when I shut it off I could hear a ticking noise coming from the transducer of my Eagle 480 depth finder. It sounded like an electrical arc similar to the noise on the ignighter on the water heater in my travel trailer. When I turned the power off to the unit it stopped. I am going to call Lowrance on Monday but anybody have any ideas what is going on? It doesn't have a speed indicator so that is not the source of the noise.

That is the sound of the transducer sending the pulses. It is normal I believe because I have noticed it on several different boats.

thats what its suppose to do.... its the signal being sent out which bounces off of objects/bottom in the water.

If you put your hand on it you can actually feel it.

Yep, that's the transducer. Mine does that. I notice it even more when it's quiet and I'm anchored up fishing for sturgeon. I usually turn it off when I'm sitting still because I heard it bugs the fish.

I use the garmin 296 hooked up to a stern mount transducer.

Well, it doesn't sound right to me, when you describe it like an electrical arc, similar to an igniter. I have owned Lowrance products for a long time and never heard anything like that. The way it works is that an electrical impulse is sent to the transducer where it is converted into a sound wave that gives you the readings on your screen.

I may be wrong, but I would call Lowrance anyway and talk with a tech - its free and better safe then sorry.

PM NW-Jet'n.

Was out with him last weekend when his newly installed Lowrance was doing same thing. He got fixed when he got back home - wiring issue.

Lowrance is Eagle is Lowrance

The Lowrance in my newest boat does it....LOUD. It drives me crazy. I thought it was messed up because the Garmin in my old boat never made noise.

The guys at Fishermans and Lowrance both said it is totally normal.

Drives me nuts because I don't like to leave it on when things are quiet. Click, click, click, click, click, click, .............

My Lawrance makes the same noise. It is much louder at 50 HZ than at 200. If it quits maiking the noise, then I would get it checked!

What MacEFL said. MY X-18 sounds like a ticking time bomb...

But...

It doesn't seem to slow down any biters in either the 50 or 200 Hz. mode.

The Lowrance in my boat clicks too. I just crank up a little AC/DC, Problem solved. Can't here the clicking anymore.
