I was thinking of making some accessories for my sled and I need some advise on metal reactions. I will be using .063 aluminum diamond plate and using rivets instead of welding to put em all together. The question is if I don't find aluminum rivets(I have know idea what rivets are made of), will I get a dissimilar(sp?) metal reaction at thew rivet points. I did take metalurgy in college but I have to admit, that was ten years ago and I didn't pay attention anyway. I don't fish the big blue so salt corrosion isn't a consideration anyway. Thanks

ALuminum rivets are most common and can be found at any hardware store. Other common metal rivets are stainless and steel. Stainless rivets are very hard to pop and larger diameter rivets such as 3/16" require a large strong rivet gun or hydraulic rivet gun. You'll find most canvas snaps on boats are secured with stainless rivets. Both stainless and aluminum rivets will work fine on your boat and not give you any metal reactions.

Thanks- that is kind of what I thought but I wanted some confirmation before I did something that I would regret.

Make sure the anvil is of the same alloy as the rivit. Some have steel anvils and alum or SS shells. Just a passing thought.
Also you may want to dip the grip area of the rivits in Zink Chromate primer just before you set them. This REALLY helps in keeping down problems in the long term use of them in Aluminum alloy's.
You can get a air riviter at Harbor freight here in Salem that will help alot toward keepin the Tendons and Carpal tunnel from sending you to the couch for a day or two. Not what I would say is industrial quality but for home use they work great.
