Just bought a small 10ft fishing boat with a 4hp engine,,,it came with a 2.5 gallon tank, I plan on trolling pretty much for 6-8 hours...what are odds that I run out of gas?

It will be close.

From what I've been able to find at a few sites, WOT consumption for a 2 stroke will be approximately .5-.6 GPH. Trolling should be less. I'd invest in an extra tank or oars. Oars could be a good idea in case of engine failure any way.

I have a 4hp 2 stroke merc with a built in 3/4 gallon tank. If your motor is tuned and running right you will be able to fish a looooonnnnggggg time on 2.5 gallon. I run mine on a 14' drifter and can troll, ie idle about 6-8 hours.
Case in point, last Saturday trolled sellwood to hawthorne and around at hawthorne 0630 to ~1000, then ran full throttle for 40 minutes to get back to sellwood (I know I am slow, but I get there!) anyways, we stil had about 1/8 tank left.
Good luck.

You won't run out. Take a 2 gallon plastic can along the first few trips til you feel comfy, or if your tank isn't full when you start.

For many years my only boat was a 12' with a 7.5 (later 9.9) hp two-stroke. Always take the oars! Not only did it literally save my life once, but salmon trolling on oar-power is a blast! The rule of thumb I was taught on two-stroke fuel consumption was that at WOT your fuel use in gallons per hour was close to your HP divided by ten. Still, I always carried an extra gallon of fuel in that boat, plus a few key tools. Have fun, but pick your offshore days carefully - you can't really appreciate just how small that boat is till the first time it gets rough on you and you realize shore is a long ways away...

I have a yami 4 hp with a built in tank, and trolling in the high lakes all day at idle, I only need to re-fill the tank once(1/4 gallon?)

I have a new 8hp 4 stroke, and wow is it efficient! I have a 3 gallon fuel tank for this motor, I have trolled constantly and with faster speed movement for 13 to 14 hours and used only a 1/4 tank!

I agree with what was posted earlier, just to keep your mind at ease, carry some spare fuel, but you probably won't need it in a day's time.

What make and year is your motor?
I have an older 4hp evinrude and 3 gallons of gas will last me about 3-4 days (if not more) of nothing but backtrolling in high flows
