I was curious if my 15ft Alaskan Smokercraft could handle a long shaft motor. I am currently running a short shaft, but thinking about upgrading. Is my transom able to support something longer.
Thanks

The cavitation plate on the motor should be even with the bottom of the boat, or just slightly below. Short to long is not necessarily an "upgrade." http://www.smalloutboards.com/images/outboard%20shaft%20length.gif

I guess I was meaning upgrading motors and I found a good deal on a long shaft.

I understand completely! Depends on the boat & the motor, I guess. Refer to the diagram and use a tape measure.
If the SS fits great, chances are the LS won't!

I would give either Stevens or Smokercraft a call. They will know for sure which motor is best!

According to the SMOKER CRAFT web page the 15 Alaskan (which I own) is rated for a long shaft. I have a LS 25 horse Merc. Wish I had a SS motor. Say 15 horse Honda? The 13 Alaskan is rated LS/SS. Best of luck
