Went to Hogg Lake today to try for a big smallie. Saw a horse touching noses with an elk on the way up- flock after flock of Cacklers headed back north to go make babies for us next year- he he. Hit the usual (over-rated) spots for smallmouths and could only muster one about 12 inches so I headed to look for Largemouths. I was so mad at myself because I am such a dyed-in-the-wool Largemouth fisherman and I never give Hagg Lake- or smallmouths anywhere- a chance.
I got over that when I put together this flipping and pitching pattern that was working really well and I was able to watch all of them eat my tube. I caught either 11, 12, or 13 (lost count) including two twins that went 4-14 each.
Headed back to the ramp and tried a few more spots for smallmouth (feeling guilty) and hooked up with a toad! After struggling to dig out my net and wrestling to talk her into it, I landed a 6-5 beauty. I asked this young guy to snap a quick picture and he starts going to town- flipping the camera around, snapping left and right like Austin Powers so hopefully I will have a good pic- I had already let the largemouths go.
Anyway, Hagg seems to be fishing good right now- Since the lake went from shallow to deep this spring, there is lot's of matted, dead vegetation on the surface so good pitchin stuff. Good luck to all. Dave
