Until coastal cutthroat opens
I caught three today (10 - 12 inches) fishing for steelhead on a coastal river. Granted, they don't put up much of a fight on a steelhead rod, but who needs to wait (unless you want to use your four weight rod)?
Can't target them during the offseason so the 4 weight is out of the question.

Ok, I'll probably get a ton of flack for this butI have never fished for coastal cuttys before. Apparently I must be missing out. I have been looking for new things and this sounds great. Can you give anymore infor Stew without giving up your secrets? Also, is a 5wt too much? I need a good excuse to go and buy another new rod....
No secrets to give out  I fish the Trask near tidewater and the Nestucca just up from Hebo. The best fishing is in the fall but you can still get some pretty good action early season.
I'm not going to post exactly where I fish here on the board but if you want to know more just pm me.

Did they change the regs. within the last 5 years? I thought cuts were on the endangered species list, and you could not fish for them anywhere?
Are there certain rivers that are now open for cuts (when the season opens), or just a few select rivers?
Season opens on the north coast fourth Saturday of May. Cutthroats are catch and release only on those rivers :applause:

Thanks for the info Stew. I have enough coastal knowledge from all my Salmon fishing to know where you are talking about. I will be out there for sure, but hopefully not in your spot! If I am, I'll move. From what I hear the coastal cuttys are a fun fighting fish! :smash:

Don't worry about it  There is plenty of room and I wouldn't mind the company

Since Stew's objective this year is to catch a steelhead on a fly, I think I heard him say that they where actually outgoing SMOLT...
Giz.... :bigshock:
Well we won't have to worry about Giz fishing for them because if they are running further away than the end of his street he won't go after them :jester:
