My 1997 merc 150 EFI has always run fine. On my last trip out, it started dying suddenly when around 5000 rpm's. It will restart immediately and I can drive it normally at around 4000-4500 rpm's. When it dies it does not sputter, cough, or anything like that.... it just cuts off like a light switch. I checked the fuel bulb and it was soft, so i pumped it up and it still dies. After about 500-600 yards of driving above 5000 rpm's is when I experience the problem. I am thinking that if it were starving for fuel it would at least hiccup before dying, so maybe something is shutting down the injectors or spark??? If you have seen anything similar to this, please let me know.
Thank you, Quin Smith

I would check battery connections and battery voltage at the rpm it dies. If that is ok try plugging in a different ignition harness.

My merc. 115 did the same thing your describing right before the powerhead went. My oil injector had gone south and the motor kept shutting down the same way your saying. I thought the same problem ie fuel filter, plugs, etc. I'm not trying to scare you just warn you of what happened to me.

You might disconnect the rev limiter to see if this clears the problem.
