Yesterday I took my boat out for the first springer trip of the year. I trolled most of the day. After trailering the boat, I noticed a tan substance leaking out from the center of the propeller (exhaust port?).

Is this normal? If not, what is it and what does it mean?

As you can probably tell, I don't know much about 2-stroke outboard motors.

Was it thick and oily? also, what year is it?

Yes, it was oily. The motor is a 1993.

same thing just happened to me with my '86. I was in stevens marine so I asked them about it and I was told it was normal for 2strokes to do that when they are run at idle for a long time. I dont remember it ever doing it before though?

I have seen this on my 88. Try this next time you are out.

After trolling or idleing for an extended period, run the kicker at WOT for a minute or so. This should help burn some of the residual oil build up in the exhaust out. (Through prop exhaust).

I have also noticed it more significantly when the water is cooler. (my guess is it cools the shaft housing more)

I did do a lower unit fluid change at one point and noticed it had taken in some water (milky). It is a snap to do and shouldn't take you more than 15-20 minutes. Change it again in a few trips of running the kicker to verify you don't have a lower unit leak.

What Lured in said is right on. Unburned oil builds up in the midsection then will slowly run out the prop when sitting.

This is GOOD news.
I also have this happen after trolling extended periods. I guessed it was oil in the exhaust, because of where it was coming from. Thank goodness for the experts!!!

When is the last time you changed the oil?
If it has been awhile change it, take note of
the color or if any water is present.
If it is you need to have the lower unit
pressure checked for leaks.

I agree! Good news! It makes sense because I trolled for about an hour right up to the boat ramp. The oil must have built up during that time and then ran out after trailering the boat.

Thanks to all for your information!!! :applause:

Another thought, what type of 2 stroke oil were you using? I have had the same problem w/ my '96. I was using havoline superflo I think. The guys at Central Lakes Marine told me to only use supreme gas and Mercury brand oils. Also as stated earlier check the lower unit. Just my 2 cents...
