Merc 9.9 4 stroke unstable idle (races)

I have a second hand 2000ish 9.9 Merc four stroke that races at idle. I have debated on whether to fix it since one pholosophy for trolling is changing trolling speed. But, it does become troublesome when it occasionally stops and needs a quick pull start (first pull everytime) to get going again. I have used excruciating care in cleaning the intake manifold and all its channels and the same problem persists. The gas is fresh, has been cleaned out many times. Should I fix this problem? My 2000 Merc 9.9 did the same thing. I took it to Dennis' boat shop in Salem and he told me Mercs and Yamis are notorious for this problem. He took my carb apart and "blew everything out" and said it idles great now. I haven't had a chance to try it yet but Dennis is a pretty good mechanic.
