View Full Version : Kicker ...No Spark

Have an older Honda kicker that won't start. Got it to cough once on a breath of ether. Pulled the plugs and they looked pretty fouled. Got new plugs. Hope they are pre-gapped!? Gap visually looked the same as the ones I pulled. Still won't start. Pulled the plugs again and still attached to the wires checked each visually to see if I was getting a spark. It was in the daylight, but sure didn't look like I was getting anything.

Can someone give me an electronics 101 crash-course? I have a multi tester. How do I follow the problem logically. I assume that I need to test for juice at the end of the wire first, then the coil? How should I test it? Be easy on me. I'm pretty clueless.

Thanks,

Shop manual says:

Fouled or pitted breaker points
Frayed high tension lead or insulation
Faulty spark plug
Check ignition coil and exciter for open or short
Check Ignition timing

Try a DR-4HS Plug, NGK, and gap range is .024 to .028, (For a BF75/BF100).
You forgot to mention which kicker you have!

Did you have the spark plug grounded when you checked for spark? I mean was the bottom of the plug touching the engine block? It needs to! I have made this mistake before and went through alot of trouble chasing a problem that I didn't have. Just trying to save you the same mistake that I went through. Good luck.

It's an late 70's or early 80's 7.5.
Running out of light so can't find a serial number or model number.

"Ground the plug"...Doh! That did it Seadog! So I have spark (will check gap tomorrow). But can't get it to fire on ether or fresh gas........suggestions?

Thanks guys,

I would throw a compression tester on it and test the cylinders.

Its a air guage with a needle dial, a hose, and a plug threaded like you sparkplug. Remove your sparkplug and screw the compression tester into the hole. Then pull the rope. The tester will record the compression. Compare that to factory specs.
