I'm wondering how this weather might affect the March Brown hatches in the Western part of the state. Are we all going to have to modify our hatch charts this year? Could we see salmon flies on the Deschutes in a couple weeks?

It's going to be one of those years where everyone is going to need to be prepared for some strange things. Water temps are going to be high throughout the Columbia basin and that is going to change things. Based on the flows that I've seen on the Rogue, McKenzie, and Deschutes during the last couple of weeks, the Salmonflies are going to be way early this year. If the river levels continue like this throughout spring and summer, the summer steelhead will likely be really late as the instream temps will be really high.

March Browns are hatching right now on the Clackamas and Sandy Rivers!

Aren't they closed for trout?

That gave me the idea to hit some open water w/ my browns.

My reading of the regs says the Sandy and Clack are closed for trout until 28 May.

However, if the March Browns are hatching in the Clack and Sandy, then they are probably hatching elsewhere!

However: Low water years on the Deschute at least will make thing better for trout and steelhead both.
The fish tend to concentrate more.

The warm water in the Columbia basin will also make fish stray into the Deschutes as they search for cold water refuge. Hopefully it's not a really hot summer to go with the record low rain/snow.
