I just bought a Loomis 14' 9/10 spey rod and now need to get a reel and line. This is all new to me, so I don't really want to buy high end stuff right now. Any suggestions for a beginner as to a decent reel and good basic line choice? It looks like I'll be doing a lot of practicing with this at first.

Welcome DavidL!
That's a good question that I myself would like to see the responses to. I'm looking to aquire my first spey rod in the next couple of months.
How much do you want to spend? There really aren't any cheap spey lines out there
I would suggest a multi-tip line but they are going to run you at least $100.
As for a reel there used to be some inexpensive Redingtons out there but since they sold out to Orvis then got sold to Sage those reels are tough to find. I suggest trying ebay
I also suggest going to River City Fly Shop where the owner Don can help you out. He is a great guy and will set you up with something.
Good luck

To balance your spey rod, you want the biggest heaviest chunk of metal you can lay your hands on.
Fortunately, inexpensive reels are heavy reels (usually). I have a Scientific Anglers System II 12/13 on my 14' 8/9 weight spey. It was $60 on eBay. Whatever brand of reel you decide on, just get the biggest one they make.
I would consider overlining the rod, it will be easier to cast. For economy, buy a weight forward floating spey line. Do your practicing with this and when you feel ready, cut 20' off the front end and install a 50lb braided loop. You can buy ready made Rio Sink Tips for $20 each. You'll probably want a type 4 that matches your line weight to begin with.

As far as a reel goes, I just bought a Okuma Integrity 10/11 for mine. The reel cost me $56 on ebay brand new. You can also find all kinds of spey line, new and used. I have a Orvis Silver Label 15' spey rod with a Orvis 10/11 reel and it came with line and it also came with a nice tube off of ebay for only $200. Actually my buddy picked two up and sold this one to me for what he paid for it. I would definatly suggest ebay. Look into the Okuma reels though, they are well priced and I have them on most all my rods. Any questions PM me.

My friend fishes that very same rod, i assume it's the GL3
it casts very nicely with a 9-10-11 Rio windcutter you can get that line coupled with a Teton Tioga reel for 300 bucks.. that's about as cheap as you are gonna be able to go and have somehting that you know will work and something you can rely on for years... you might want to look around on ebay you might find something used for cheaper.. in look for a good reel that will handle a WF 10 and 250 yards of 30 lb backing
