Now that I have this Midge thing figured out I want to take a shot at it with Kokanee. Suttle lake, Lake Billy Chinook any other lakes closer to Portland that may have Kokanee in em ?

Has anyone here Midged for Kokanee ?

I am thinking Suttle Lake would be a good one because it's not too far. It's open and it is full of Kokanee.

Does Suttle have Bows ? I know it has some big browns......

Abalone,
I think there are some rainbows in Suttle, but it's mostly browns and kokanee. I stopped in on my way to Eugene last week and it looked awesome. The area above it got absolutely torched in the B&B Fire, but the lake was mostly spared.

Wait there more...

I've never heard of anybody doing that well midging for kokanee. We've done great with small krystal flash streamers that are either wind drifted or slowly stripped. One of the local fly shops sells (I don't know if it's in wide distribution) a fly called Kokanee Candy which seems to work well. It's maybe a size 10-12 streamer tied with blue, yellow, and red (I think) Krystal Flash.

I have had a lot of luck w/ different types of nymphs for kokes, I don't see why midges wouldn't work, too.

We were up at Wickiup a couple years ago using blood midges for browns. Couldn't keep the dang kokes off our flies. We knew when we were going through a school because we'd get several raps before one hooked up.

Good luck!

When in your school of kokes, it doesnt matter what you throw at them, even your sweaty hot sock tied on your vise would work! The secret is finding the school and go from there!..............L

Simtustus is a lot closer to Portland, and it has bigger kokes. Suttle may have more, but not always, however Suttles kokes are always smaller than Simtustus Kokes. Simtustus also has Browns, and a lot more rainbows.

I had a coworker that caught kokanee at CP fishing black midges. I will have to experiment with fishing midges for kokanee with my downrigger.

Good to see you posting again Snapset.
