Anybody have some suggestions on where I can find some lake action withing an hour of SE Portland? I have an urge to take out my pontoon and catch some fish (even if that means bluegill, carp, or stockers). I was thinking Rosylyn Lake or a lake near there, but I don't have the first idea on how to fish them. Any suggestions are welcome. If you feel the need to PM me, please don't hesitate. Thank you for your help.

Go an extra few miles and hit Harriet Lake if the road is open. Use typical lake stuff - woolybuggers, beadhead nymps, midges and throw in a few BWOs just in case. I usually carry some Adams paras too.

Roslyn might work too. There are always holdever fish from the previous year.

How do you get to Harriet Lake? I tried looking it up on expedia, but couldn't locate it.

Take Highway 26 over Mt. Hood. Go toward Bend. Watch for Timothy Lake turnoff on the right side past CJs gas station about 6 miles. Drive past Timothy Lake and follow the signs. You should be able to find it from there.

The road from26 to timothy is closed for the season the best bet and the road is open is to go through Estacada and fallow the road up that way towards timothy I called last week and the road is open and clear. Good luck. rp

thanks Ryan. Last I heard the road to Timothy was open, but the gates into Timothy were locked. Things change rather quickly up there.

clacksteel...the Timothy Lake road from the Clackamas River road is still closed due to a washout. There's a detour though. Turn left just past the Ripplebrook Ranger Station and follow the road right to Harriet. I believe they have signs posted for the detour.

I think I'm going to go to Benson Lake or one of the surrounding lakes to fish for some sunfish and some hold-over stockers. From what I can tell Benson is open, but if anyone knows other wise please tell me. Anybody have any advice on how to fish this lake and the waters around it? Thanks.

I fished Harriet yesterday all day. Nada....

The road to Timothy is open to the gates and the Snowmobile gates to the lake will be opened within a week. I talked with the ranger district on Saturday about getting to round lake and they told me that road was still snowed in.

Harriet lake is a funny lake. At the risk of sounding like a lousy fisherman: This was my third trip up there this winter. I have had limited success. Yesterday there were a lot of people fishing bait from the bank. I hardly say a fish caught. Midges were everywhere but until the sun went down I didn't hardly see a rise. Then I started fishing around the log boom. Small trout were rising on midges till dark. I fished right in them with Midges, Seal Buggers and everything I could throw at them. I got one lousy bite.

But heay ! You are probably a better fisherman then me so go try it. ( lots of luck ).

I know that lake has lots of fish in it but I aint figured it out YET !

OBTW: everything was hatching. I saw tons of bugs on the water including Mayflies. I think Timothy will be the place to go after this weekend. It looks like spring up there.

I spoke to a few people at Harriet that had been up to Timothy that day....

I tried Benson w/ no luck. I was hoping for some hold over trout, or warm water species. No trout seen, and the water was not warm enough for the other fish. I think I'll head up to Hagg, Harriet or Timothy soon.

I fished Lost Lake in Clatsop forest last Wednesday for the big batch of stockers they just dumped in there. I caught a dozen and my partner got 4. They were all pretty small. Biggest one was 11 inches.

If you willing to go East.

Some of the lakes in Eastern Oregon a better in the winter months. The shallow lakes that Algea up fast in the Spring for example.

Haystack res is a good example.
Pine Hollow is fishing well but the water temp is very low and fishing from a pontoon boat would be a chilling experience if you weren't dressed for it.

I have been wanting to get over there but no one to go with.

I don't know what it is about Harriet lake. Those fish won't let you get near them. Even when there is a rise it's tough to get close enough to cast a fly to them. I don't know how many times I have reeled in my fly rod to reposition, then when I get just close enought to cast the fish move. That place has kicked my @$$.

Anyone have any experience w/ the lakes up around Mt. Hood (Trillium, Frog, etc.)?

Yes !

I have fished a lot of them. There is a Mt. National forest publication that list all the lakes. There are over Sixty lakes listed. Some of these lakes have monster trout in them. I prefere the solitude of a lake with few people and big hungry fish. So I avoid hot spots like Trillium or Frog. ( There are two frog lakes BTW ). I am here to tell you some of these lakes are as good as it gets. Some will surprise you. At least two of these lakes are lakes I have fished all my life but have only recently realized what prizes they are. Mainly because I now only fly fish.
I have been thinking about posting these lakes on IFISH but fear that I will anger someone for giving up their secret.

With gas going to $3.00 per gallon I imagine even more pressure with be put on these lakes making it Not so nice to be there and this years Drought ( If we have one ) Is going to have a negative effect also.

So instead of blabbing about my favorite fishing holes Invite me to go fishing this spring and I will take you to some trophy water in less then 100 miles from Portland.

Pontoon boats and fly rods only........

Who need Craine Praire when you have #$%^^&& lake ?
Trout over Five pounds that fight like steelhead.

I have not fished laurence yet. I have been there and I know it is a good fishery. I don't know that it has Trophy trout in it. It was one of two things on my agenda for last year that I didn't do. I didn't get to try for Coho in the ocean either.

I have fished Goose lake in Washington. It's a meat lake but the fish can be plentyfull and fun place to fish.

I'm also looking for suggestions on some good lake action later this spring. My kids are in their early teens and I would like to take them on a "fun" fly fishing trip before they become too socially engaged to hang out with boring old dad.

What I have in mind doesn't have to be trout, just plenty of action, so bass/crappie/kokanee/bluegills/etc.. would be great. We love to camp and explore so this could be a multi-day trip to CO or farther. Among the ideas I'm kicking around are trying to put a dent in the bass/crappie populations in Davis or CP, rainbows at Lava lake (C&R), or maybe even Brownlee for crappie.

I usually bore them by chasing steelhead, so I figure I owe them a scenic trip with lots of action (BTW, they love sight fishing). Any input would be appreciated :help: !

Have driftboat, will travel.

If you want a scenic trip with a fair amount of action, try Olallie lake. I've had some awesome days up there with mid-day may fly hatches. If you go, take a bunch of para-adams with you. When the hatch is on, it looks like rain on the lake. It's a real experience just being on the lake in a tube or toon when this happens.

Olallie Lake doesn't open til June, high lakes opener. For more info see the Olallie Lake Resort web page. Web page is updated monthly it says, but nada since they closed for the winter.

Some "easy" dry fly action at Olallie sounds like fun, I will give that some thought. I should mention that if we go somewhere for trout we will do C&R, with the possible exception of keeping a few pellet-heads for the pan depending on the lake. I might have to join the dry-fly swap if it's still open.

Thanks!
