Tried to fire up my '01 175 Sportjet today but no go. I get the loud beep and a humming motor noise but it doesn't crank. Had it in neutral, checked the fuse and put a charger/starter on the battery but the engine doesn't crank/turnover.

Any advice other than to check the starter?

Thanks...John :help:

Sounds like maybe a bad connection somewhere. If the starter isnt kicking in and spinning and the battery is charged.I would clean & check all battery terminals.Plus any connections on the starter and solenoid.
Its a start anyhow.I'm sure you will get more advice.

I'd check into the Stator. Boat Doc' should be able to give you a more complete answer.

Sounds like the starter isn't spinning fast enough or the drive gear is stuck. Check all connections and cables for corrosion and tightness. Also make sure the battery is fully charged. You should be able to turn the drive gear with your finger and have it move up the shaft. If it's stuck CAREFULLY put a screwdriver blade under it and have somebody turn the key to the start position momentarily that will drive the gear up to the flywheel.

I had the same problem a couple years ago with my sport jet. Lift your dog house and try starting it. There is a toothed shaft in the starter that is sapposed to kick up and engagae the fly wheel.

If the shaft just sits and spins and dousn't engage the fly wheel all you need to do is greese that shaft and its as good as new......GOOD LUCK

Thanks guys, that was exactly the problem! It looked a little rusty but some oil and some manual turns got it fired back up.

I never would have figured that one out by myself. Great board!!! :applause:

test your battery. I had a similiar thing happen. replaced teh battery and it started right up. recharging will not help a dead battery.
