Mark Vickers

Okay, as the springer swap comes to a close, it's time to fire up another one. How about we crank out some dry flies this time?
First 11 swappers are in (I've already included myself). Swappers will need to follow the guidelines that I just posted.
Everyone will need to tie 12 flies.
The due date for flies will be March 31st.
Swapper and pattern:
1. Mark Vickers - Griffith's Gnat
2. chrome mandinga - royal humpys
3. Abalone - Mayfly
4. clacksteel39 - elk-hair caddis
5. Stew - Clarks Stone - Tying
6. EugeneFisher - Z-lon comparaduns (march brown colored)
7. LunkerFish - Olive Parachute
8. Fish_N_Russ - salmonfly
9. R Jackson - small, olive Kaufmann's Stimulator
10. Navigator - Olive Hopper

By dry flies I am assuming you mean trout flies ???
Hmmmmmm
I use lots of May flies but haven't tied any up this year yet. They are next on my list so. Why not ?
Count me in....
This should include emergers ????

Hey - you can't both tie TBD flies....unless they're different colors, of course. I'm thinking about it.

a floating trout fly...is what I believe he is referring to.
Mark, please clarify, but I doubt you want midges, scuds or nymphs...

I could tie up some Z-lon comparaduns (march brown colored). The trout have eaten them up so far this year.
This is my first fly swap... how will these be traded (I'm in Eugene)?

Id like in on this one, I have a great, simple salmonfly pattern that works good on the Deschutes.

Brad, yeah, I'd be happy to tie up 12 dry flies to trade for one of your pontoon boats. I could use another to go with the new one I just won!

Wow Lunkerfish, you don't mess around do you?
Well, there are two main reasons, #1 is that this is the first swap I've particpated in and I don't want to be the guy everyone is waiting on; #2 is I have finals over the next week and a half, and my memory is likely to be mud afterward, so see reason #1 again.
Thanks for hosting this Mark. I'm looking forward to seeing everyones patterns. Have fun!

At risk of divulging that I'm a postal amature, what is the best way to mail the altoid tin? How many stamps would it take as well?
Mark Vickers
03-07-2005, 12:23 PM
What I do for swaps:
Put the flies with toe-tags into the altoids can. The toe-tags kinda act as a filler and keep the flies from getting jarred.
The altoids can goes inside a small padded self addressed stamped manilla envelope. Three stamps covers the postage nicely unless you've got super heavy flies (not a problem for this session I hope.)
This envelope goes into another larger unpadded manilla envelope. Three stamps works just fine here too.
Dang! It's been a long time since I've tied such small patterns and unfortunately my eyesight isn't what it used to be :hoboy:
Oh well I'll plug along

Some tyers I know don't put wings on their flies.
The May flies I am tying are tied on a #16 hook. They are the exact size and color (olive green) that I encountered in the Cascade lake last spring. I put wings on them so I can see them. They are so tiny.
When I am fishing Clear Lake or Goose lake the Callibeatis are going strong. I like to have a dry fly and a wet fly rod set up. Most of the action is with the Nymph but around Noon the Duns start coming off the water. Sometimes for only a few minutes. The fly I am tying for the swap is the ticket. Most of the Mayflies I have checked were either this Green or Grey.....boy to the trout slame them...
After I get done with this dozen I will tie another dozen for myself. They don't last very long when big trout grab them.

I'm doing the same thing Abalone. Since I'm the swapmeister, I have the advantage of having the longest time to get my flies done. While I have tied all of my flies for the swap, I have continued to tie extras and continue to cull out the weak ones.
As well, since I was on a roll tying (griffiths) gnats, I started tying a bunch of sparsely tied black gnats. I actually like these better. The griffith's gnats look somewhat like a tiny wooley bugger, which is not what I was really intending.
I've tied both on little #18 hooks. Getting the head right on these suckers is probably the most difficult tying thing I've ever done. I went out and bought a hackle guard... a tool I had previously thought was a superflous item only made for tiers that had more money than self control.

I forgot to include this with the pattern I tied.......I dont know if it has a certain name, but it was given to me by my uncle several years ago. He was the OSP trooper for warm springs/madras area for 20+ years before retiring....and he had many friends who used a similar pattern with great results during the salmonfly hatches.
BTW originally it was tied with orange and black floating yarn (I didnt have any of that)...the white elk is for high vis/floating and big black head gives good profile from underneath.
