I think it would be fun this summer to have an IFISH fly fishing for surfperch rondevue.
Say July, August ???
Chickahomini is a go to place if you don't mind the drive and I hear Haystack is being stocked again with large fish.
This is the time of year for Haystack

I read an article some time back (I can't remember where) about some guys in the area who flyfish for surf perch regularly. It sounds like a ball.
Just have to watch for those sneaker waves! :smash:

Some one I know does it a lot. He family owns a cabin near Canon Beach. He's been at it sinc the 50's.
Go on a windless day, low surf, use a 4wt. or a 5 wt. rod.
cast it into the surf on an incoming tide.
Beaches that have Razor clams generally are good for Surf Perch. Persh have a wide flat body and the pull hard. They are fun to catch.
Surf Perch cruise the surf line biting at anything brite or attractive. I have tied up some bright Pink, Green and other color flies that are weighted. I just need to get down there to fish. I can't imagine the beach getting too crowded with fly fisherman.... :yay:

Sounds like a hoot. I've been wanting to catch those little buggers on a flyrod for a long time. The only suggestion I would have is to avoid the spawning season when they leave the surf zone for local bays. I think that happens in late June or early July, but that's just a guess  . If anyone has experience flyfishing the surf, some "how to's" would be helpful.
Hopefully I can make it.

As I understand, we are coming into the best time of year for surf perch. I will be going to Astoria on Monday and will hopefully have some time to fish for them. I may not cast flies for them, as I haven't decided yet. I'll report when I return.

Traditionally I have always surf perched in the summer months. I will have to research this to see if spring is a good time. Growing up. We always fished for perch after we were done clam digging. Start at low tide and finish at high tide when fishing is best. You need flat conditions.
Meaning a low low surf. 2 or 3 foot swells are best and that usually means June July August. But like most of you guys I have never done it with a fly rod.. Bright colored shrimp patterns are the ticket.

After reading about doing this I gave it a try a few times but came up empty handed. I would love to try it again though as it is just fun to run around in the waves. It is alot of "work" especially if the wind is blowing...but the wind never blows at the coast  Put me on the perch outing list. I'd love to grill some of the tasties up right on the beach.
