DROP-SHOTTING

I was watching the outdoor channel last week and caught the tail end of Bill Dance Outdoors. He was using the drop-shotting techniqe to catch bass. I did't really get to learn how to set this rig up or why someone would fish this way. Anybody know the advantages of this technique?
