Hello all,
I am planning a camping trip the first week in May. Which lake, Simtustus or Prineville, has the better smallmouth population? Size of fish?
I like Billy Chinook, but the fish are smaller there.
Thanks for your help!

I'd go to Prineville. But then, I've been to Prineville. Be sure to stop and get a pizza from  Cinabar Pizza at the light in downtown Prineville. Nummmmmy! C&R, Steve

I prefer Prineville; it has some abrupt drop-offs rather than just steep banks. Try helicoptering spinnerbaits at these places.
LBC is just too danm busy for me. However there are some big SM there; look for humps well off-shore.

I would recommend Prineville too. Cinnabar in Prineville has a spicy cheese pizza that canot be beat by anythning in Mill City.
Prineville reservior has some very nice quality LM and SM bass. The first week in May might be just a tad too early, unless like some claims, everything is about one month ahead this year.

Shalom,
When we hookup at P. rez this June, I'll bring a Cinnabar's "Meatlovers"; it's about the same size and heft as a manhole cover. You bring one of Giovanni's best and we'll have a taste-off. Even cold it's mighty good.

Thanks for the input!!
Prineville sounds like a great place to try, and I will check out the pizza joint for sure.
I wish there was more information available on the quality of the Warmwater fishery in these lakes, but I guess that I will need to create that information for the rest of us.

Shalom, I have eaten at both Giovanni's and Cinnabar. That is why I said what I said about the Pizza's. I'm anxious for you to take BuKuBass up on his challenge, then you will know the truth!!!

Send an SASE and $.25 for a list of books, however, I have in front of me a copy of the "Washington Bass and Panfish Fishing Guide" and a copy of the "Oregon Bass and Panfish Fishing Guide" by Pete Heley. Says $8 on the cover of each. I got them at my local tackle shop, so you may find them at yours, or even at the Public Library. Look at it this way...the author at least knows there are bass in Oregon and Washington. Does the DF&G?
The problem I have with it, is that I don't know the Oregon county locations very well , so it takes a lot of scratching around on maps to find where these places are. :hoboy: C&R, Steve

i have heard rumors about good catfishing on the flats where the creeks run in,good crappie fishing on the deeper points and very good trout fishing in front of the dam, along with the bass.

JD,
I saw some information on the net...but I'll take your word for it. I know that there are boo-koos of smallies upstream in Lake Billy Chinook, so they would almost have to be in Simtustus. Have you ever fished for them in there?

The Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife list Simtustus as having Largemouth.

I like Prineville because if you want a change of pace the 8 miles of Crooked River below the dam is great fly fishing water for trout.
