Last fall my son and I returned together to Brownlee Res.
for the first time in 12 years for crappie, bass, and chukar. There we made a new friend in Bert& his dog Daisy-mae.Bert who is a upstanding member of Portland Bass&Pan fish club, took us under his wing and showed us "drop-shotting" for bass.I however gave Bert a leason on the fine art of crappie fishing in a time when even the seasoned veteran of Brownlee were having a hard time filling there live-wells.Bert suggested that I become a member of ifish to share information and meet new friends that enjoy fishing as much as I do.I look forward to hearing from any members that have fished Brownlee or the John Day river for smallies.Living in Madras, We drift the John Day often for bass.We have recorded several 4-5lb.smallies on light tackle.Once again,I look forward to hearing from you.

Welcome jd. I'm in Metolius and spend alot of time on the JD. PM me for contact details.
DSing is an effective technique for bass everywhere; there's even a modification that you can do which works for river fishing beyond the deep holes.
I prefer Oxbow over Brownlee; fewer people, more current.

We fish Brownlee all the time, also Hells Canyon and Oxbow. Its all good. Oxbow has the best bass, Brownlee has the best crappie, Hells Canyon has the least people.
A little bird told me that the crappie are biting at brownlee on sunny days in the area between steck park and mountain man lodge.. We plan to check this out soon.

j.d. Smallie, Im glad you joined us here at Ifish. Welcome aboard.
Bert's user name here on Ifish is shalom and I'm sure he will reply to this post as soon as he sees it. You remembered his dog's name and the name of the club he belongs to. You really paid attention, that's cool.
Fishing the John Day is on my list of venues this year and I look forward to nailing some big smallies up there.

Hey bucketmouth,Thanks for the reply.I see shalom replied as well. The John Day is one great bass fishery. We have caught most of our lunkers on a drift from Bowermans launch down to Clarno.Tubes seem to work best.Try motor oil, pumpkinseed,or(chaurtruce?).In the spring while the water is high, real-eye jigs in white 2" can be hot if the smolt are running down river.

Hi SHALOM,I finally made it to ifish.Tell Daisy-Mae that Grizz's nose healed up nicely and not to feel bad.He shouldn't stick it were it dosn't belong.Say,three co-workers of mine want to hire a guide for walleye fishing at Rufus. If you or any other members have information on this, please let me know.Thanks.

Look up a place called Fly by Nite. He know the river real well and probably the best guide out there. I will probably not spell his name right but I believe it is Tooshay. I went fishing with him one time and we did pretty good walleyfishing. He lives in Biggs or Rufus, I am sure other people know who I am talking about. Hope this helps.

Touche is his nickname. His first name is alan. He will be at the sportsmans show. I have fished with him and he knows his work. Can put you on walleye, sturegon or bass.

JD
Welcome, you will find Ifish a great place to share things and also get great information. I fish Brownlee every year. :yay: :yay: I love to eat Crappie and go get a load. :smash: If you want another great smallmouth spot shoot me an email. I'm sure that you know this, but Thorny at the Hitching Post in Richland is a good contact for Brownlee water conditions. Crappie Chaser is as good as they get. Welcome again, Fishrite

We fish Brownlee every year as well.Usually in June. The smallies are great fun,but our main focus has always been the crappie. Seems like we find them in the same holes every year.We fish mainly around the Woodhead park area. Once in a while we'll venture up the Powder arm.The trip is always worth while.Good fishing!

jdsmallie and shalom:
I have fished Brownlee and the John Day for years and neither compare to the :bowdown:Umpqua River. Have either of you fished it? :bigshock: I'm telling you it is unbelievable!! :yay: :yay: To get into the greatest fishing you have to float it, but good bass can be caught from the bank as well. I've caught over 200 bass in a day.  There are some real hawgs in there too. We've caught bass over 5 lbs. on almost every trip. Drop me an email........Fishrite

Fishrite ,
Year's ago i fished the Umpqua for striper's while i lived in Eugene . I havn't fished it for smallies , but have talked to enough people to believe that every thing you have said is true . It make me wish that i had my drift boat back .

I'll vouch for the umpqua as well. I sold my DB to a guide on that river this past August and he wanted to try it out so he said he would row and I could fish! Tough deal huh? My wife and I fished for about 2 hours, landed close to 30 fish and each of us landed one fish over 20". Most were in the 11 - 14 " range, but on the light tackle we used it was AWSOME !
