Hi,

I just bought a 16 ft flatbottom, I need to find power for her now. 4 ft wide bottom, the rating says for up to 35 hptiller and 90 remote power. I plan to use the boat for duckhunting and some boondogging. I will be loaded at times duckhunting and need to be on step. How much power, (let's talk power at the pump) do I need? I want to stay with tiller.

and... the oarlocks are built into the boat (factory), way forward so you would row while sitting on the front step platform, anybody rowed this configuration? It sure wouldn't spin like a drifter but it might track well for back trolling. Thoughts?

thanks in advance

Paul

I had a 1990 16' Alumaweld flat bottom with a 90hp Merc. tiller pump that pushed it just fine.

I have a 2004 17 1/2' North River flatbottom. I don't know the width off hand. 14 gallon step tank, tiller steer, bow mounted trolling motor and a Yamaha 90/60 jet. I started off with a 60/40 and with two adults, fuel and gear it was slow on step and slow on plane. Switched to the 90/60 and everything got better instantly. I also have the oar locks in the front of the boat set up to row from the front deck. That was the suggested location from the guys at North River. Works great for steering the boat down a run but, unless you have alot of extra energy to burn, you will not want to row it against any current.
