View Full Version : changing your own oil

What do all you inboard owners, who change your own oil, use to suck the old oil out of the crankcase? On mine, I've got to suck it out of the dipstick tube. I've used the drill pumps and the electric pumps from FM and need to find something better. Any suggestions?

The next time you drain the oil pull the drain plug and take it to a machine shop they can make you a fitting to hook up a hose to the drain plug. Then pull the plug on the boat hull stick the hose out the hole and drain your oil. Hydraulic hose works good because you can find a plug for the hose. I had this setup on an inboard that I had it worked great no leaks in the boat. This is what I would do if I had another inboard.

I only have one of those hand pumps that also screw on to the dip stick tube. It only takes me about 2-3 minutes to pump it out. Doesn't bother me because it takes that long to drain out the bottom anyway. I'm not worried about the little bit in the bottom of the pan left over since I change my oil every 30-50 hours depending on the weather/running conditions.

I use a ShurFlo...they work great and the oil is contained in the unit.

I use the drain hole out the plug hole in the back also...Going through the dip stick hole dosent seem to get all the oil out...especially the goo on the bottom.

Mine came somewhat that way. there is a drain plug at the bottom side of the pan on ea side & one has a hyd. w/ a screw on plug on the end that will reach out the hull drain plug, works good, I would think that you could do that to any other pan.

What gundog said.I have a 3/8" hose long enough to reach out my boat drain plug atached to a [potty mouth] screwd in to my oil pan,end of the hose sealed with a high tech cap(3/8" bolt and hose clamp) :wink:just pull the boat plug shove the hose threw the hole pull the hose clamp/bolt and drop in a bucket, done .When not in use the hose is strapped to the engine block lifting hook with a zip tie.

And what Tonto said, but I just leave my four feet of hydraulic hose coiled under the crankcase.

Beyond the motor mount and the engine coolant overflow reservoir is the following picture, zoomed in:

I used the silver elbow with brass fittings to replace the crankcase drain plug and added 4 feet of hydraulic hose with a hydraulic hose plug to pull through the bilge drain hole in the transom and into a recycle oil container while I dust off a frosty adult beverage. The drainage is slow because of the elbow fitting restricting the flow somewhat. But its a cleaner job than on my Ford truck.
Hope the picture helps.

salmurai,
If you need help with making a fitting for this to go to the oil pan let me know. I have the equipment to do this in my home shop. Just give me a PM we can have a cold one while making the fitting for the pan.

Thanks for all the responses, guys. Believe it or not, I don't have a drain plug in the oil pan. The only way to get the old oil out, is out the dip stick tube. So where did you get your hand pump? What is the brand name? Thanks again......... Salmurai
See how many responses I get from this...I purchased an oil cap, put a hole in it, open the hose connected to my oil pan, hook up my air compressor to 30psi and wooooooooosh

Hand pump is a Jabsco. It is called a "brass utility pump". Mine came w/ my boat. Try Kem equipement in Tualitin or Boater's World online? It gives several other applications on the side of the pump.
-Bilge Pump
-Oil Draining
-Diesel (fuel transfer)
-Anti-freeze

Sucking oil through the dipstick is standard practice on marine i/o's and inboards. The dipstick's are made so they are at the bottom of the pan just for this purpose. Some even have a threaded connection at the top. Either a powered or manual suction pump will work and your local marine money depository (Boaters World, West Marine, Sextons, Englunds, etc.) will have several options from which to choose.
One important point...you'll have much more success with any oil change process if the oil is hot. Run the engine above idle speed for 5-10 minutes before draining/sucking the oil.
Another quick tip is to use a pair of gallon sized zip lock bags to change the oil filter. I double them up just because I've had leaks before when using just one. Also, if the filter is mounted upside down, use a nail to puncture a hole in the top (threaded end) and drain the filter's oil into a pan or whatever basin you've got. Once it's done draining, you can remove the filter with a minimum of fuss.
Finally, since there's always a few stray drops, I throw a couple of absorbant diapers into the bilge before I start. Keeps the bilge shiny clean...well, at least it isn't messy with oil
