Hello,

I would like to buy a kicker motor, already decided on a yamaha. But would like to get a second opinion on which to get, T9.9 or T8. I have a 22' fiberglass boat.

A lot of people are going with the 8hp Yamaha Hi Thrust. I know that when I had my boat built the builder recommended to me to install a 8hp Hi Thrust as the kicker.

All I can tell you is that I went from a Johnson 4 stroke 15HP to a Yamaha T8 with the tilt/trim option and would never go back! The T8 is smooth, starts easy and just sips the fuel. Plenty of power too.

T-8
sweet, priced hi but nobody else offers combination of features: 4-stroke, hi-thrust, power trim & tilt. I push a 24' Sounder with mine. XXL w fixed kicker brkt welded on swim platform..just hit the tilt switch and away I go..easy on back and no kicker bracket bushings to wear out.Love it.

W my boat a 9.9 might get another mph out in a get home kick tho..but where I fish 1 more mph is going to make a day long kick shorter but still a long duration trip..
For fishing speed control, inc backtrolling for halibut, the hi thrust, big prop bite and heavy duty gearbox are the ticket.

I've got the T8 w/ electric start and tilt on a 20' NR Commander and it works great.

Comparing the specs, both have same weight, +/- 3 lbs.

T9.9 has more hp. But does not have power tilt.

Does Power tilt option overweights having 25% more power????

I have a 24' commander and the T8 has plenty of power
I fish the jaws at charleston and on the Umpqua a lot and both can get ripping
the T8 has never let me down!

You can get the Canadian version of the Yamaha 9.9 high Thrust with power tilt. I have one and have been happy with it. However, I would be intrested in a side-by-side comparison of the two motors. I have been told they perform the same.

I was just at the boat show, and some guy was trying to tell me that the Yamaha 9.9 HT, was larger now than previously because the new 9.9's were 15hp motors. I will say that the 9.9 on display was definitely larger than 7 year old 4-stroke 9.9 I've been using, but how does it make sense that they would slap a 9.9 sticker on a 15hp motor?

Well, Thanks far all your input. I hope I wont regret this, but I have decided on T9.9 with 25" shaft. $1995 was a good price at the boat show.
