I found a great site with instructions on making a 2-piece spare oar. The instructions are well written w/ pictures, and you can make one of these oars for just a couple of dollars. To find it just do a search for "Quick and Dirty Oars". The instructions are for an 8 foot oar , just lengthen the 2 pieces accordingly for a longer oar. I also made the wooden insert pieces about twice as long as the plans call for, and the finished 9' oar I made weighs almost exactly the same as my 9' gull does. :applause:
