I was sitting around one Saturday afternoon when my 6 year old granddaughter came over. I was elected to babysit for a couple hours. Try that on for a while and you will know how tough of a job that it can be. After a short time of her wanting to do this or that while I watched a little football, she said she wanted to go fishing. WELL, Old gramps couldn't pass that up so we raced into the garage and found the old "Snoopy" rods and headed for GI Joes for worms. It was right on the way to Lake Oswego too. We picked up a couple snacks while there and we set for a sunny afternoon on the water. I didn't want to make this tough so we fished along the RR tracks at the East end of the Lake. Soon, we had a bobber down and the excitement began. Shortly she forgot about the snacks and was helping bait and cast the two rods. It really didn't matter which bobber went down next, it was always hers to bring in. After catching and releasing about 15 of those little "yellow" Perch, She announced to a passerby that it was a very good day for fishing. That made my day a real hit and she was happy to tell everyone of her success. Once she was talking to another little girl and stopped her from talking and said gotta go, I see my bobber starting to move and I got another bite. We had broken clouds with a nice warm sun to keep our spirits up. About an hour was enough for her so we grabbed our " Snoopy Rods" and headed for home. Of course what fishing trip could end without stopping for a kids meal for her at McDonalds. By the time we got home she was sleeping. But once we got home and she found someone willing to listed she was telling them how many fish she caught and how few Grandpa caught.
If I may borrow a quote,
"IT WAS A GREAT DAY TO BE FISHING"
Take a little time for the youth as they are and most certainly will brighten your day.
