WOW! awesome pics, I had a similar episode years ago on drift creek (siletz system I believe) after hooking around a 12" trout I hadwhat I believe was 2 6-8 lb steelhead chasing my fish all around, never quite catching up to it. I did try to catch teh larger fish but didn't have anything interest 'em the way that poor trout did.

I've seen this happen on the Metolius at the Allingham Bridge Pool. The Bull Trout was almost as large as the one described on this link. It was a wild sight.

you can have the smae thing happen on the metolius if you fish it often. Had a small stockie get nailed by a bull a few years back. Never landed either, and it was not the epic battle like this one. Great pics! Those bulls are voracious feeders and like to ambush their prey. They often feed on kokanee when the spawn in the fall. Cool stuff!

That would be soooo cool to see! This past summer we went to the Snake for a little vacation and we were lucky enough to score a permit to fish the wild section of the Snake. A similar thing happened to my dad while we were fishing this one riffle. He had a blue and red wigglewart on and he hooked this trout. He was reeling it in and this smallmouth bass came out of no where and tried to get that lure away from the trout! It was amazing!. He came at the lure 6 or 7 times! And finally the bass knocked the trout off and got both hooks in his face! I couldnt believe it. Neither could anyone else. Dad was actually kinda bummed because he wanted to keep another trout. :depressed: Oh well, that was one of the coolest things Ive ever witnessed.

I once had a small redfish up next to the boat on conventional light tackle, fishing in the Everglades 10,000 Islands area, and just as my dad was reaching over the side of the boat to grab it, a humongous tarpon came out of nowhere and slammed it :bigshock:. The tarpon swallowed the red whole, then took off for Mexico. He didn't get the hooks in him, and after taking about 150 yards of line from me just opened his mouth and gave me back the redfish.

When it hit, my dad fell back in the boat and about crapped his pants

Whoa...
I can't say I've ever experienced something like that.

Hey Chrome,

That happened to me several years ago on the South Fork MacKenzie. I hooked a whitefish and was stripping him to the bank. All of a sudden it felt like I was hung up. Funny thing, it was coming in like a log...to my feet. I look down and there he was aproximately 30" long. I actually thought I was going to bank him, that didn't happen.
Next I did a bad thing. I pitched a 4 inch trout I caught into the run. I gave it a couple of strips and ...BAM! The Bull hit the surface Like he was taking a dry. Took the whole rig.
My friend and I fished the rest of the day with no more exposure to this aggressive fish. Fished the same spot often, waiting for the that bruiser. Never saw Him again.

The whitefish didn't make it.

Hopefully the part about pitching the trout into the run doesn't bother anyone. Not something I had done before or after this event.

This brought back a memory...

When I was 10 my dad took me deep sea fishing off half moon bay california. I remember bringing up a rock cod of average size when BAM, I knew I had something else on...I thought it had taken one of the 4 open shrimp fly hooks, but no...it was a large Cabezon...HUGE CABEZON! Long story short the cabezon actually held onto the cod all the way up until one of the deckhands gaffed the fish...we were amazed because the fish never let go, even when it saw us!

I remember the captain telling me that it was close to a record Cabezon, but I was too young to check...or care.

One of my greatest fishing memories was when I was fishing with my son, who was ten at the time. We were fishing for green ling with sand shrimp off of the north jetty at Barview. My son was using an Eagle Claw feather lite trout rod with 6 pound test. He hooked a green ling and was fighting it when all of of a sudden, pow, his rod doubles way over. He fights and fights and fights and gets about a 30 inch ling cod up to the rocks. The ling opens his mouth, spits out a 10" green ling and then swims away. That was mean fight for a 10" fish. It was a great thing to watch.

I had this happen to a fishing partner on the Metolius about two years ago. I was fishing a few yards away and my friend says fish on! I start walking over to watch, and my buddy started screaming at me to get over there quick! Luckily I was right behind him. He didn't know what was going on... He had a very nice 12" rainbow on (about 2 miles downstream from the bridge crossing - at the last campsite) when out of the depths this huge fish came flying up underneath and out of the water! The thing must have been at least 30" judging from the size of the 'bow. My friend starts to try to horse the rainbow in quickly while this bull trout is going after the hooked fish. It reminded me of seeing a foul hooked salmon fight - the rainbow was ALL over the place. After 3 misses, the bull finally grabbed this rainbow across the back right in front of the dorsal fin, gave a couple good head shakes, broke the line and the last we saw of the event was his strike indicater fluttering away down into the depths. We both stood there, staring at each other, like we saw a ghost or something, and said to each other - "Did you see what I saw?" We were glad there were two of us there, cause we didn't think anyone would believe it. Left me speechless, and that website is a great description of it and the feelings.

I saw the same thing on the north jetty at barview as Jetty Nut. It was in 2003 and I had been skunked again bank fishing for salmon on the Trask, so I decided to see if I could catch a rockfish from the north jetty. There were a couple of other guys there, and we would get the occassional rockfish by casting and retrieving jigs. One of the other guys had a rockfish on that suddenly got much stronger. After about ten minutes we could see there was a 30" ling cod on his line. His buddy scrambled down the rocks to wrestle with the ling because nobody had a net. As soon as he touched the ling, it opened its mouth and released the 15" rockfish and swam away.
