I know I need help and was wondering if anyone would be open to a mini-clinic kind of like we did on the Sandy last summer with Pete Morris.
Anyone????

While I don't know a thing about spey casting, I would certainly be hip to another casting clinic like we did last year, even if it is focused on spey casts. I'd love to learn to snake cast (even if I was throwing it with my one hander).

I'm with you on this one. I have been lugging around a spey rod for about 7 months now and just starting to get the hang of it. My fishing buddy is probably getting sick of me asking him " do that last cast again". I have learned alot from fishing with a buddy rather than trying to go out and develope bad technique or habits on my own. I have thought about taking lessons but can't find the time to do that and fish and hunt and work and..... you know what I mean. Anyone in South Wash. want to put something together? :help:

Rob is an excellent spey caster so we should take him up on his offer.

Let's have the clinic as soon as possible. I need the casting help NOW. I am doing fine on small rivers like the EFL where I can cast and swing from bank to bank. I fished the NFL yesterday and felt that VERY long casts would help to cover the wide relatively shallow flats we were fishing. That same thing will hold true for the Sandy and Clackamas. I don't know where it would be possible, but it would really help if we could get instruction on both river right and left.

I have heard that Rob Allen is an outstanding instructor, plus I would like to meet him.

Lets do it, maybe if we all show up, between all of us we might be able to help each other and have a good time.

I know this isn't what you had in mind. Check out speyshop.com.

For anyone who makes it up this far, Erin does this clinic each Saturday. Mike Kinney is there as well. About once a month they will bring someone in. Two weeks ago they had a couple fellas from BC.
There are usually a billion speyrods for the casting.

What ever happened to this event. Summer stelies are on the way. It woulb be good to do this soon. I can make it to the EFL and the NFL easily, or even the Clack and Sandy. Golf course hole and the above the hatchery on the NFL is good. Stordahl on EFL, Gordon creek or oxbow on the Sandy, or the spot below Cross Park on the Clack. I missed the Spey clave this year again. Let get together and compare cast. I mostly use a snake roll ( right and left). I good use some work on my single spey.

Go on Westfly and ask for "Snap-T"..or do a search and see what the Southern Oregon Flyfisher say about him. He is the best I've ever seen.

Rob,

How about a post about your weekend in SF?

I know there is some conflict of interest with you, but other than your new 14' 7wt were there any new rods making a buzz? Lines?

Dave

PS why didn't you compete? We need a local to represent next time!

San Fran was a fun event.. I'll tell you what impacted me the most though had nothing to do with spey casting or even fishing. I can tell you that Portland has seriously missed the boat. Golden gate park is one of the most beautiful parks I have been in and it's huge!!! It's an AWSOME!!!!! asset to the community. Portland should have done something similar...

Now to the event..

our new 7wt is awsome like all our rods are enough about that...

My thanks to the Golden Gate angling and casting club, they were awsome hosts and went out of their way to treet the exhibitors well, Awsome lunches and a wonderful dinner at an Egyptian restruant. A place i'd encourage anyone in the are a to go to.. on Balnoa between 42-41st
anyway the club treated us like royalty Thank you!

I learned a lot about new spey lines coming out, I hope you guys are ready to shell out some bucks for some new lines!
recently I had fallin in love with how mid speys cast. Well I still like them but umm well Hardy has a line coming out thad blows it away. The Carron lines are still great but very pricy and Partridge has some awsome new lines in the mid length range. Also Way Yin has worked out new single line weight XLT's that are also absolutely awsome! I hope Rio takes notice of these and does some modifications to improve the performance of their lines.
Spey fishing has some absolutely wonderful people involved in it. Simon Gawsworth, Ian Gordon, Way Yin these are some of the best casters in the world and have time for nobodies like me. It sure stokes the ego to have guys like these compliment my casting.
I wish I had good things to say about the rods from other manufacturers that I cast but I don't, keep in mind I cast the rod that won the competition and I hated it! no one is making garbage, just making stuff I don't like..
I'll tell you though seeing Scott Mckenzie cast was absolutely AWSOME beyond belief! he and his buddy were 15-20 feet beyond the nearest competitors!!!!! and their style is different than anything I have seen simply incredible and kinda hard to understand how it works!

the last 20 minutes I was there I spent with Iam Gordon from Scottland, this may sound harsh but I am going to say it anyway, everyone who learned that hitting the rod hard with the bottom hand learned improperly! I am stating this as a fact now because I have seen first hand that it is clearly wrong. Now I have to relearn entirely how to cast. I used to believe it was simply a style difference now I recognize it's a casting flaw plain and simple! All the more reason for us to do a spey get together soon, before I forget and go back to my old habits...
Another thing I learned was a way to make the double spey more effecient. it's a way to bring the line back to the casting shoulder without losing energy by throwing the line downstream..
as fas as why I did't compete, I didn't want to come in dead last:D

Give me some dates when you are available and I'll try to put it together. Let me know where would be the best spot as well. Are we wanting this a formal clinic, or more casual? Let me know.

At present the Only dates I have set aside are May 14-15 for the Sandy river Spey clave and May 21-22 for a club outing.. Any other dates will be fine. My only suggestion for location would be someplace close to Portland. Sandy or Clackamas would both be good Choices.. As far as how formal or informal I have no preference, whatever people want...

This statement pulls a lot of weight coming from you Rob. Regarding sticking to hard and fast casting rules you're about as laidback as they come. Thanks for the report, glad it was worth the trip down there.

i'll try to explain it a little.

when you hit the cast hard with the bottom hand you 1, shock the rod and decrease it's effeciency by introducing slack and 2 it causes you to accelerate the cast too soon forcing your loop to high and not enough out in the direction of the cast.
I was talking about this with Ian Gordon and he says you can hit it with the bottom hand but it has to be after the rod passes through the vertical plane.. This drive the cast out instead of up..

Just go out and practice! It is one of my favorite ways of fly fishing for steelhead on our NW rivers. It is beautiful to watch and fun to learn!............L
