I read in the paper last week that some ponds and/or hatcheries were cleaning out there large brood stock trout and planting them in some lakes/ponds near salem. I was wondering if any of you had any more info on these fish...where would I find them?

I was kind of dissapointed to see this in the paper...although if it wasn't in the paper I wouldnt even know about it.

I agree it's too bad they advertise these plantings only because it would be cool if people didn't kill them. I have seen brooders that looked like Death warmed over. Sores, fins missing, not fit for catfood and people still kill them. On the other hand. If they release the fish they will heal. They will get strong, healthy, Chrome colored and make monster fish. They reached their prime as far as Breeding is concerned but that doesn't mean they can't resume their bright colors and swim to fight a good fight.

I know a lake where.....#%%$%$%%. and what a fight.

Last winter I caught about a Twenty inch Brooder. It didn't look too bad, one fin banged up, missing a tooth or something. When I released it, all the bankies around me started moaning.

Wyd U turn em loose ? Donts you lyke trout ? If'n I 'd a caught that thing i'd a kept et.

For about ten minutes those folks kept casting to the spot I released that fish.

The more I fly fish the less it makes sense to kill a trout.

I have targeted and caught broods in Walter Wirth. I always turn them back because the whole point of stocking broods is to allow people to catch BIG trout. These fish could be bonked, cat fooded or any number of other ignominious ends, instead they are placed in easily accesible public ponds and lakes. I say hooray to ODFW for doing so. We paid for the fish via our tags and taxes, they are maximizing the enjoyment of those fish after they have fulfilled their primary mission.
Go to WW lake. Cast and perfect your double haul. Use a large nymph. I hope you hook one and return her in good health for others to enjoy.

I have caught my share because I like lake fishing in winter and my local holes get those big brooders. Really fun to watch something that big chase down a streamer. I'm amazed that people keep them, especially since I do sampling work and some of our lakes have some terrible water in them. I have guys pester me about releasing them but I just tell them that those fish are for the kids to catch- I go for the "Guilt Card" everytime. Doesn't work but I stil can't believe guys eat those nasty things!

That would be a topic for another Post but It is an issue I am interested in. How many IFISH fly fishers keep their catch ?

Never ?
Sometimes ?
Only when the fish looks mortally wounded ?

My fishing partner is intolerant of people killing fish.
He has embarrased me more then once by lurching out a boats when the people kill their catch..

I like eating trout if they are from the right water and under the right circumstances. But the days of bagging a limit are long gone......

If no one killed a fish would there be more bigger fish to catch ?

In some cases yes and in some cases no.. Many of the planted fish in certain waters don't survive the winters.

The mortality rate if very low at least.

Brooders is a case for me in which the fish are not good table fair. Why waste it ? If I am going to eat a trout it is going to be a smaller fish anyhow.

Ok... Go ahead and smoke a Brooder. Taste like smoked crap.

they stocked wailing pond at 16th and mcgilchrist and the main pond at cascade gateway park. it is by humane socity on turner road... good luck catching them tho, there were 4 boats and a float tube there the day it was stocked... i dont thnk many fish left. I got yelled at for releasin a fish there before too... i dont like fishin it, it is stupid bunch of hicks crowded around and doing nothing... fishing crowded stocked ponds plunking powerbait is too boring for me.

Good luck

so your fishing partner would deny someone a meal if they so desired? did those people not buy a license so they can keep them if they choose? (i'm not trying to get under your skin abalone, but your partner would get under mine :flowered:)

i catch and release trout most of the time. sometimes the people i'm with want me to keep them so they can have dinner. i haven't caught my limit of trout in years now, because i don't want to stop fishing until the light runs out.

never...never ever....

although your fishing partner seems to be a bit emotional about his fishing...not a bad thing, but you have to consider how most people fishfor trout...with bait. Most bait trout fisherman will never set the hook on the first bite, rather they will wait for the fish to swallow the hook. sad. but if you consider the facts here....those fish wouldn't survive by the time those fisherman have ripped their guts out while trying to retrieve their $.05 hook...

Thats what most people dont realize about flyfishing...Fish almost never take a fly deep, and if they do it just means you were too slow to set the hook. I can honestly say that I have NEVER, NOT ONCE had a fish take my fly deep...although I know I miss alot of fish because of this...I would rather miss the fish than dig it out of it's belly.
