I noticed that there are a few crappie fishermen here. I was wondering what are your favorite techniques for taking the slabs? I like to troll jigs on the edge of cover and, jig and bobber fish em in deep wood.

Good to hear from another panfisher. Try to locate the schools with a small jig on a beetle spinner. Put a Crappie Nibble on the jig or a piece of Perch meat and troll till you find them. We use light tubes or light and small feathered jigs again with the Nibbles or meat.

The crappie should be dispersed more now and in the cooler water (deeper). If you find one attacher a leader and bobber to it and let it go....home to the rest of the school.

Most of the spots in the Portland basin get a lot of pressure. Seeing your from the John Day area you're in a great spot. Let me know when you're in to them.

A little jig below a slip bobber allowed to drift around.

Plugcutter,
I don't think hanging a fish from a bobber and letting it go is exactly legal. At least not in Idaho. Buying a portable fish finder is probably less expensive than the ticket. I have seen people do that trick before, but once at Brownlee the guy followed a dead crappie about 200 yards before it rolled up to the surface. I'm not trying to stir up anything... just check to make sure it's legal.

Always check the regs before trying something new. I thought about trying spider rigging but I guess there is a restriction on the number of poles a person can use (atleast in this State). Mebbe I'll take a trip to Dixie and try it.
