There is an employment opportunity for me in Elgin.
Is there any reason I wouldn't want to sell my house, quit my job and move to Elgin ?

Lets see: Fishing, Hunting, Hunting and fishing.

Now if I could only get the wife to see it my way.

I bet with the $400K I could get for my house I could buy a pretty nice spread in Eastern Oregon. Might even be able to put in a Wood Stove to keep me and the Mrs. Warm in the Winter. I would sure miss all the traffic jams. :help:

I am 55 years old. This could be a good way to transition to retirement..in about Five years.

Anyone live near Elgin ?

This is about flyfishing. It would put me closer to a River. A log house on the Grande Rhonde with a nice shop for keeping my boat warm.

Your nuts if you don't jump on it, and if the wife doesn't want to go tell her you are more than willing to come back for visits... and besides it will be a great place for the rest of us ifish flyfishers to come and visit :yay:
Good Luck

alright, alright. so I get the dumbnut award for the day   It's from lack of sleep, taking care of a 16 month old full time for a week while mom is gone back east, and just your general ramdom dead brain cells.
Sorry Isaac, and Tony. Might be just easier if you both switch names.

There is an employment opportunity for me in Elgin.................NO. One of the highest umemployment rates in Oregon.......maybe if you can cowboy!

Is there any reason I wouldn't want to sell my house, quit my job and move to Elgin ? Sure if you are an idealist, but reality soon sets in!

Lets see: Fishing, Hunting, Hunting and fishing. Yes
Now if I could only get the wife to see it my way. Good luck my friend, unless she likes to knitt quilts with the other women at the Sunday socials. Hope you have religion

I bet with the $400K I could get for my house I could buy a pretty nice spread in Eastern Oregon. Might even be able to put in a Wood Stove to keep me and the Mrs. Warm in the Winter. I would sure miss all the traffic jams. Yah, but can you spilt firewood, or do you have enough money to buy it?

I am 55 years old. This could be a good way to transition to retirement..in about Five years. Yes maybe, but I would rent first

Anyone live near Elgin ? Have a place in Hells Canyon on the Imnaha River........L

This is about flyfishing. It would put me closer to a River. A log house on the Grande Rhonde with a nice shop for keeping my boat warm. Worth the effort, but really is that for you, making new friends, 6 1/2 plus hours from Portland for old friends, and can you and the misses handle being disconnected from the local McDonalds?

I think he said that there "was an opportunity for employment".....not "is there an opportunity"

I lived in La Grande back in the mid 80's, and drove through Elgin on a regular basis, and worked there sometimes on my side job. Now I just go back to visit my friends and nothing has changed in Elgin. Nothing! I have a feeling that's the way it will stay for the foreseeable future. As for fishing, in my opinion that stretch of the Grande Ronde is only "ok" at best for fly fishing. But if you're willing to float the Wallowa from Minam down, or drive down to the lower Imnaha, you can find some decent fly fishing, and good steelhead fishing when they're in. The steelhead secret is out and the upper Wallowa can be just as crowded as the Sandy Pipeline hole unless you know private property owners who will let you fish on their land.

In my opinion, living in Elgin would be extremely boring. But if you live to hunt, fish, be in the outdoors and relax into your sunset years, it may be your cup of tea. But outside of that, there isn't much going on.

the first time I fished up there I said the same thing! But, now I have spent time up there over the last 6 years or so and realize Enterprise is where the action is, but La Grande has most of the jobs.
