Egg patterns seem to be the black sheep of the steelhead world, Butt you cant deny there are times when thats what a fellas gotta do. I dont have a problem with them because I think they are slightly more complex than most people give them credit for when fished under an indicator. Its not like swinging when you can take your eye off the fly and enjoy the view(not that thats bad) but you always have to be paying very close attention to whats going on, right depth, fly, bead head or no,in the seam, mend, mend again. Anyway my question is? Does anyone else use a wide variety of colors and sizes like me or am I the only one? I use evrything from a size twelve hot pink with a tungsten bead head to a size six multi color jimmie hendrix. My number one fly is a size eight apricot supreme with a light purple eye. Thought I would post hasnt been much on here lately.

For winter steelhead, I usually stick to a size that most represents the size of an actual winter steelhead egg. For me, that seems to be the most effective. It seems that peach, orange, and pink are the most effective for me. Everyone will have their own preference of course, but I just can't see arriving at any winter steelhead stream without a few egg patterns on hand.

I have seen the egg pattery outfish all other methods on teh Alsea below the hatchery. This younger college age guy "put on a cliinic" with his weighted stonefly to a crystal egg. It was combat fishing, he was hooking fish left & right. Convinced me! I now have an assortment of egg patterns from Hills.

I would fish a Cigarette Butte if I thought it would catch a fish.

I researched my fishing log (again). I have hooked almost fifty steelhead (hooked, not all were landed ) this year on egg patterns. Over 60% were on an orange color; over 20% were on pink. Other successful colors were cerise and chartreuse. There are many shades of orange available, although a medium flourescent orange has worked best. Another popular color is referred to as "steelhead orange".

I will continue to try different colors.

My most successful size is small, about the size of a 6mm or 7mm bead.
