Today my former boss gave me a vintage grampus rod (bamboo) made by Kirakus & Co, Japan. Its not in great shape but still looks usable. Does anyone have experience with this rod? What do you think about it? This will be my first experience with bamboo rods. Thanks...

Just after WWII, Japan kicked out about a million of these. They are not worth much and not collected or fished much. Their action is usually not good. But string it up and see what you think. I would say they are not a good introduction to the world (addiction) of cane. What is the length? Most were kinda long and heavy. If you want to get into cane there are a lot of good, cheap rods but none came from Japan.

Since your former boss gave you the rod, youd better try it. But dont expect a good example of bamboo action from these WWII *** rods. They look good, but thats about it. Even a cheap H/I (not Montague) would be a better introduction, say 8.5ft and smaller. And if you are really interested in getting into some bamboo, DO YOUR RESEARCH! There is a lot of crap out there and flawed rods for sale. Otherwise, Good luck and Enjoy.
