This is a fine line to walk, but our 25th is coming up next year and the wife and I want to get away next summer to a sunny beach destination in the summer. The conditions for her include very nice amenities, some shopping opportunities and some fine dining. I'd also like to get a couple of shots at some bones. So where to go in July or August? I'm nervous about anywhere in the Carrib that time of year with hurricane season. We thought about the Cooks, but the bonefishing I heard has dropped off and it's nearly halfway around the world. I'd like to keep this within 4000 miles from home. My ace in the hole is to go to Kauai and fly her back and then bop down on the Sunday Morning run to Christmas Island. Any ideas?

I would recommend my 2 favorite places to fish and vacation...

#1-Belize. Great shopping, World class Bones, Tarpon permit etc. Belize is fairly inexpensive. You can fly into cancun and drive down, flights into cancun can be had for under $300.

#2 Tahiti....Bora Bora or Moorea...all french polynesian islands. Your wife will never forget this trip. Fishing is great if you tIme it right. Everything else is absolutely amazing, sightseeing, shopping, restaraunts...French Polynesia has it all, but it will cost a pretty penny to go here. I took my wife ther 2 years ago and we are already planning our return trip...

thanks for the tips. I'll definitely look into Belize, Tahiti might be a bit far. I was looking into the Seychelles, but that takes a 1 - 1/2 days to get to, but I heard the fishing is phenomenal. However, the fishing can't be too good or else I'll get in trouble, this is after all an anniversary trip. I need to keep reminding myself.

HAHA, your right...I wanted to take my wife to the olympic peninsula for our anniversary...she smartly declined.

The Keys might be a good option. Good time of year for fishing, not too far, and you can hit some South Beach shopping on your way down to the islands to keep your wife happy. And as we all know, a happy wife means a happy husband!

A little bit earlier in the year (May-June) and you miss the start of hurricane season and the snook fishing is red hot. Hurricanes are going to be a threat anywhere in the Gulf, Caribbean, or Mexico.

From what I've heard, save the Sechyelles for a trip where you can focus on fishing. The islands are a long way off in the middle of the Indian Ocean, they're hard to get to and there's not much else to do besides fishing and diving. While that sounds like the perfect vacation to me, my wife would sniff that one out from a mile away.

Belieze would definitely be a great option as long as you aren't out on one of the remote islands. Again, great for fishing and diving, but not much for your wife unless she's focused on the same things.

You'll have a great trip anyway you go!

My wife is happy with the Steamboat Inn. Our anniversary is in September and that is where we were this year. I caught a steelhead too!

It's worked for 34 years!

belize gets my vote also. Good fishing for many species, close, cheap (a relative term) and not as much an issue with hurricans.

AndyK,
My wife and I spent a few days at steamboat on our honeymoon. Caught some fish, and the food is out or this world. Loved waking up so close to the river too.

My wife and I love Costa Rica, Tamarindo to be exact but there are a lot of other places there that are just as nice. Great fishing and it is dirt cheap, the only major cost is the air fare to get there. They even have some very nice places to eat, but the local fare is the best and most people speak english and it's very safe.

Lets take a vote on where he goes...

Could you imagine trying to explain to your wife that a bunch of random guys from the internet voted for them to visit South America...and thats why they are in this godforsaken bug infested cannibal palace!

The Cooks? Was there in Sept and the fishing was excellent, especially for Travali. I didn't catch as many bones as I had on my one visit to the Christmas Islands, but I wasn't fishing from dawn to dusk either. Isn't the flight from Hawaii to Xmas once a week....if they've increased the flights, that sounds like a good option if you're wife will allow you to sneak off for a couple days. If not, she'll hate the Xmas Islands unless she's a die-hard fisher as that's the absolute only thing to do there.
PM me if you want further detail on the Cooks. Best of luck wherever you end up.
Cheers.

I'll go back to your earlier thought on Christmas Island then, since its not really a great place for a non-fisher. Do a week being Mr. Romance on one of the Hawaiian Islands then go to Christmas Island the following week. My wife and I got married in Hawaii, spending a week with family and friends in Kona, then flew off to Christmas for our honeymoon (she fishes too). We had a great time and are looking to do the whole thing over again where we send the kids home with grandma after a week in Hawaii and we go back to Christmas  The place is lousy with bonefish, and despite its reputation for smaller bones there are plenty of larger ones too, and I had a shot at a larger trevally each day, even though I pretty much blew those opportunities.

I have some ideas for next time though.
