Trout,myster sez:
as usual, releasing the big females after a picture is a good gesture.
Brings up a good point. While not an expert walleye fisherman, I have caught a few. I adhere to a personal slot limit, 18"-26" are keepers all others go back. So the question is how do you tell a female from a male? I always assumed the large ones were female.

I myself adhere to the catch and filet method of catch and release. 1 box cajun, 1 box regular mix, little bit of Johnnys seasoning, little bit of garlic pepper. Dip in milk, directly into special mix . Drop into 375 degree peanut oil. Eat Heartily!!! The female walleye wear panties!

The walleye sex doesn't matter to me...filleted out and in my frying pan I am an equal opportunity eater.

I have fished walleyes for almost twenty years. I do not know of a way to ID a male from a female walleye. Typically females are more pot bellied this time of year and the males tend to be more cylinder shaped (without a distended belly area). During the summer it is really tough to tell the differnce. I release any fish over 24".
I know I will get flamed but, Oregon has a world class fishery that seemingly everyone is interested in wiping out. I have several folks a year fly to Oregon to spend $$$ and fish exclusively for the walleyes. Their comment is always "Oregon doesn't know what it has, this is an amazing fishery! Why are they trying to get rid of the walleye?"
I have heard all of the rants about walleyes eating smolt and agree that they do eat SOME. The issue with the salmon and steelhead is not with the walleye but rather what man has done to the river basin.

Right-on! Dick O'Brien told me some years ago he thought the walleye fishery would some day replace the salmon fishery as the #1 game fishing sport. Besides walleye taste better. Yes I like salmon, but I like walleye better!
