I was wondering if anyone could give me some info on good techniques for bass fishing around lily pads (in shallow lakes). what is the best way to get to the fish holding under lily pads. in the past i have thrown crankbaits on the edges, but have caught very few that way. can you jig on the edge of the lily pads or even throw jigs out in the lily pads without spooking the fish? I was thinking of heading over to vernonia pond with my raft w/electric motor but have yet to catch a fish except for perch in there. I see thousands of 2-3 inch largemouths by large stumps in the water everytime i go (where are the big ones)

I love fishing the lilly pads. Get a weedless grass frog or a Johnson minnow spoon with a skirt trailer on it and throw it right into the thick of the pads and then work it across the pads making as much comotion as possible. DO NOT set the hook until you feel the fish. Also experiment with different types of weedless bass hooks on rubber tube jigs. I hit a few lilly pad bass on those this summer.

yes, what tanner said! Johnson minnows are good thick pad baits. You can work jigs through pads, but magnum tubes or brushhogs seem to get through them better. Use 17-20# line, tuff line is good in pads. When you get a big one on you'll be glad you went heavy!
Try vernonia at night.

Hay! I love those kind of lakes. The way I fish Pads is to take about two casts at the pads, then go find some wood and catch some fish. {THAT IS WHERE THE FISH ARE}! But if I am stuck in the pads I fish the holes or inlets or points at the edges, or pockets inside. Jig are real eazy to get hung up on the stems! I like Spinnerbaits, Shallow running small crankbaits, and Plastics fish weightless on a 3/0 hook, Tubes, Spydergrubs, Brushogs,

Adam, growing up in N. Florida, I fished alot of lilly water. i'm a big fan of Texas-rigged soft baits and have had good success with it in OR. I've had bass strike plastic worms when they were hanging off the pad. Its weedless and uncomplicated fishing.
