Ok, here's a bass tech. post. Since I have learned soooo much on the other board from the helpful tech. posts, I will try to post some good bass tech's here (because I've still put in more time bass fishing than any other type of fishing).
This is going to be about senkos and how to fish them. First thing everybody is wondering, what's a senko. Well, a senko is a plastic bait. It's exactly the shape of a bic pen. It doesn't have a twirly tail or legs, It just kinda looks like a turd!! But, don't let that fool you. These things absolutly murder bass!!!
After you've spent the six bucks and bought a bag of senkos (They're made by Gary Yamamoto baits, and avail. at FMS) Get a 4-5/0 ofset worm hook. Rig it texas style. Then put half of a nail wait in it and get ready to kill them.
Fishing a senko is easy. Almost too easy. You throw or pictch the bait softly into a bush, or pads, under a dock, where ever you think Mr. Bucketmouth lives. then just let it free fall. When it settles on the bottom, just lift the tip of your rod and let it settle down to the bottom. Do this slowwwly. When a bass picks up, you'll see your line jump or twitch, Reel up the slack and drive it home! I like to use heavy line when fishing a senko. 17-20lb test will keep you from getting broke off in thick stuff.
These baits works so well because of their subtle action. As they fall the tail just slightly wobbles. They are also packed with salt, and when you smear them up with smelly jelly bass hold on to them a long time, giving you ample time to set the hook.
I am a recent convert to senkos, I got my behind whoooped one day by my buddy outfishing me 10 to 1 against my jig. Obviously I had to try it. My catch rate went up immediatly. They are good baits to use where the bass get alot of pressure (Hagg, Tenmile, Siltcoos) and lots of tourney guys are using them.
Give them a try. You might be amazed.
