Here is something I have used for many years. I have found this works on all species and doesn't jerk the offering out while providing ultimate power.
Instead of jerking back on the rod in one swift motion. With the palm of your hand under the foregrip PUSH UP, and with the other palm of your hand on the reargrip PUSH DOWN in one fast firm motion. It will set the hook firmly without removing the offering.
Some of you may already apply this method, but if you don't it should improve your hookup ratio!
