The egg drifters have been successfull on the Sandy according to recent posts. Does anyone know if fly's have had similar success?

Being new to the steelhead game I was also wondering if the muddy conditions need a different approach? Dark fly? Sinking line?

Thanks!

without pressure, those fish are ultra aggressive with all that cover (mud). about ten years ago me and a buddy each hooked over 100 fish in one day in total mud (when we were skipping high school ). half of those chased our corkies within two feet of our wading boots, so swinging works great since they aren't scared of the bank.

we were drifting corkies back then, so if you can get a bright egg pattern down maybe with some crystal flash, you should be in business. if you fish trad then put a heavy tip on and try swinging a chartruese/black wooly bugger too.

If that doesn't work, get a gill net and string it across the river for ten minutes, that works awesome. It's a great way to match the hatch.

I fished before work tue and today(thur). The gear guys are catching coho even though the water is muddy.

They are doing well on corkies and yarn-basically flies. So yes you can do well on fly gear. But you need to get down near the bottom in pretty fast water so you have to flip a ton of split shot out and I for one don't find that too fun.

Summer Steelhead are whole different game. Swing flies just under (or on) the surface.

My nephew fished the Sandy last Saturday. He hooked nine fish and landed seven: five silvers, a steelhead and one old, dark chinook. He tried again on Monday and was blown out by high, muddy water.

When the river clears again, it should be real good.
