A friend just got back from Kloan. Fish were coming in waves. It was pretty crowded and you could look down river and start to see people hooking up downstream. Then he would hook up and then the wave would pass. He landed a couple of nice natives, but missed a few other bumps.

Does anybody else have any good news?

I don't know where Kloan is. I've been on the river floating the last two weekends. Pine Tree to Heritage, and Beavertail to Heritage. Fishing is slow to dead all over the river. I took one fish Sunday, prior weekend two rods two fish (3 days). I spoke with Steve the ODFW guy, he says 20 fish a day in the traps at the falls, good years the number is around 200.
As far as crowds go it wasn't bad until after Rattlesnake (we had to pass through anyhow). Spoke with a group on the way down that caught two Chinook that morning...no one catching metalmouths.
That being said check out the fish counts over The Dalles. Just need the fish to come up the river.

I have been on the river since the 4th. Best fishing has been PineTree to Sixteen Canyon (sixteen canyon has been the best).

Sorry for the bad news.

Hey Slow and Low, probably have seen you on the river a lot this summer... I agree it's been dead. I've floated to the mouth several times and lately been sticking to the upper runs. It won't be until end of the month and october this year.... Brrr. time to break out the neoprenes...

It cracks me up to be on the river all summer and then hear great reports from a section i KNOW didn't boot out any fish. It's been slow... But very glad to hear they are moving in, thanks Two Fister but stop posting about it

Oh and Kloan road is not for the inpatient...

Hey Hardware,
If I can't get the time to go I might as well talk about it, right? That way everyone can feel as bad as me about not getting out more. :jester:

And your right, anyone that gets impatient on the road to Kloan gets to take the express elevator straight down to the river. :yay:

Hardware,
You got it! I didn't get too many Bull Trout trips in last year cause of work and kids, but that should change this year. Had a friend land one that was pushing 15 pounds last year about a half mile below the Dolly Hole. Send me a PM and we'll get out on the river. :yay:  :yay:    :bigshock: :jester:
My 4 year old son Danny picked out all of the graemlins for the email!

Hey Hardware, Long Shanks or anyone else,
Have you guys been out on the lower D? I might actually get to break the leg chains and get a day in. How's the water look?

no change from all the sources i have. good reports are still based on pods of fish and not the bulk...

i am rapidly approaching burnt out-ness on the D, and the fish aren't even in yet! going take some time off the river. i think i'm going to shoot some clay pidgeons this weekend and maybe clear all the beer cans out of the drift boat for next weekend.

when the fish come in it's gonna be :smash: time

Thanks for the update. Maybe I'll hit the lakes one last time instead. Better yet maybe I'll see if I can whack a couple of grouse!
There's lots of time left to catch those fish! Don't get burnt yet. Maybe add a few more cans to the bottom of that boat while watching a little college football!

We pounded the lower Deschutes tuesday through friday and managed 11 fish for 2 rods. Still very slow for Deschutes standards, as said by others there are pods of fish and youre in or your out this year. We did manage several B-runs last week so the Snake fish have wandered in. I have been fishing lower river since 78 and cant recall this slow of a season. Good luck to all

I don't have a whole lot of familiarity with the lower D (only fished it a couple times). Thinking about giving it another try, but with the generally slow fishing being reported, I wonder about the flow levels. Does it seem a little high for this time of year or is it more or less normal?

Siwash,
You can check out the flow at the Moody Gauge (the mouth) at the USGS website at:

http://waterdata.usgs.gov/or/nwis/uv/?site_no=14103000&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060

The small red triangles mark the long term average. It looks like it's pretty close to that average right now.

TF,

Thanks; yeah, that's pretty near what I recall from my previous visit (~4400cfs, i think).

This is the reading that made me wonder about it, but now I see it hasn't been updated since last Friday:
