I am headed to Gold Beach on Tuesday to fish for Chinook, but I wanted to steal some time and fish for the 1/2 pounders. Anyone know any good flies and techniques for these and a few good spots for bank access close to gold beach?? Help please

I like small flies...I use a double hook size ten. There are many good patterns, but my number producer for 35 years has been a Red Ant...basically a royal coachman with a Red Fox Squirrel tail wing. There are large fish in the river too now. Last night we did quite well here in the middle river. Other patterns to consider are the Tiger Paw, Caddis imitations, and all the usual Steelhead flies. There is some good fly water near Agness...like Hotel Riffle. It will fish best from the North Bank. Don't overlook the lower sections of the Illinois River. Rogue fish move in there waiting for water temperatures on the Rogue to fall. Another great riffle is Coal Riffle. It is about 9-10 miles down river from Agness. You have to walk down a steep bank, but it's worth it.

thank you for the help, you are a kind man. I will be printing and using your advice come Tuesday. Can I buy that red ant pattern up here toward Portland? Or are there any fly shops in Gold Beach?? It sounds like you get on the water plenty, so prayer does work I see. Thank you again, have the best night.

5string, I drifted Dodge to touvelle last thursday, it was pretty slow. I hooked 1 small steelhead and a few trout. I got the steelhead on an olive soft hackle, and the trout all took egg patterns. Most of the guides were backtrolling streamers. I won't be going back until October.

Water looked great, but was kind of high still.
