I have an 03 9.9 Merc and went with the aftermarket set up. About $600 installed. If I did it over again I would go with the 8hp Yami. Stud of a motor. Very very quite, quick tilt (unlike the aftermarket) and tons of power. It's a motor that was built to be a kicker.
Also I heard that Yami and Merc are sharing technologies and that Merc is releasing something very similar.
A friend just picked one of the Yami's for $2,500 (w/trim and electric start)

Mercury makes a kit that runs about 600.00 plus installation, they also have a new high thrust model that will be released in a couple months that will compete with the Yamaha in performance and price. The after market kits typically set the engine back from the transom and may make it difficult to reach, where as the manufacturer ones are integral. It would be cheaper to add a kit rather than sell it unless you just want a new motor.

Well I would like a new Yami so if it's around 600.00 I mine as well wait and save some change and step up to the plate....Thanks
