View Full Version : Fly Swaps & Slackers

To avoid hijacking one of the other threads, I thought I'd throw out my ideas for how we should run swaps (and deal with the slackers). Please understand that the SRC was my first ever swap, so I'm by no means a scholar on the topic.
Agree on a target date for having all the flies submitted.
Everyone mail in their flies to arrive by that agreed to time or brings them to the face-to-face swap.
Those folks that don't get them in on time don't get flies and don't distribute them. We essentially just write them off. We then add them to the list of folks that won't be included in swaps again (unless they've got some really hard luck alibi).

I don't know ?
It's easy to get hard nosed about it. I had the same idea myself. I know one of these guys and to tell you the truth
he is a pretty nice guy. In fact I owe him. He gave me one of his secrets and shared some fish scent with me.
I am sure they have their reasons for being late and I figure if I explain the deal to them " Why we need to be on time" then they will be a little more considerate.
As punishment I propose that they have to conduct the next fly swap.
That'll teach em......

So far I think all of the swaps had problems.
I think that a statement about responsibity to meet your commitment to the group needs to be attached to each swap.
If you are going to participate then participate. No excuses.
These are fun but become a headache for the coordinator.
There is expenses of mailing the flies to each participant. I think that if you do not have your flies in on time then you should have to mail your flies to each person, not the coordinator. It takes time and money to baby sit those who are not respectful to the commitment to the group.
AB, you have a right to be mad and frustrated. As a mod I would not object to a list of slackers so that they can not participate in future swaps.

Hi, I'm one of the tardy parties. When it became clear that I was double-booked for Tuesday evening I mailed them when I THOUGHT they'd arrive by Tuesday's mail -- but maybe they didn't. :depressed:
Good idea to have clearly defined deadlines and procedures, though, and I think Abalone's suggested punishment is wildly appropriate.

Honestly I am not mad at all. Frustrated perhaps but not mad.
I think we just have to fine tune things a bit.
I truly believe these folks are all good people and mean well. Maybe repeat offenders should be sorted out but
as far as I know the two delinquents are new to swapping and I don't want to discourage them from participating.
This is fun and wouldn't it be cool to have a Twenty man ( Oops got get gendure correct here ) people swaps going ?
Who needs tupperware ?
BTW Paddlefish: Those flies look cool. Good job I think everybody will be happy to get them.
What pattern do you call them ? Micky Finns maybe ?
Now if Baitdown can just find time from his busy schedule and send me the last bunch of flies.....

Those bucktails I tied were inspired by Roderick Haig-Brown's "Silver Brown" pattern. (And right now I can't recall which of his books seemed to feature it.) I call them the Fry Fly.
They're supposed to suggest the infant cuthroats, cohos, and steelhead which are in the rivers where cutthroats prowl. All of them are pretty colorful litle guys, with orange-ish tails, mixed colors through their bodies, and a red hackle to suggest gills or cutts. Once in a while I'll give them parr markings by including a grizzly hackle on each side of the wing.
Hope they're used with cutthroat success!

I am going mail out the rest of the flies this weekend. ( Unless an emergancy comes up)
Baitdown will just have to go without.........
If you are reading this Todd ? Don't send me any flies. Wait till the next swap.
I would like to do another swap soon. Not sure what it will be but there will be some firm ground rules about
participating. Something like " If you don't make the deadline you are out ( PERIOD ).
Hate to be that way but it is only fair to everyone else participating.
Either you enjoy Tying or you don't. I would go out and buy flies for the swap before I 'd punk anyone.
There will be some other stipulations too.
Any ideas for the swap..
How bout Bass or warm water flies ? I like making poppers.
Trout Nymphs perhaps ?

I'm thinking we should pull out the stops on a chum swap, and then all head over to the Kilchis or Miami and put 'em to work.

Should we head over to the Tualatin then? They have a pretty heavy run of chums that I've personally witnessed working their way through the rapids and falls in the lower river.

I've got Chums on orange too. I think they are heavy plankton feeders similar to Sockeye. So I might have just the pattern for them!
BTW, I got a nice hatchery steelhead and my first Coho of the year today, - a fat'n'shiny 11lb hen! Both fish were on the krill pattern tied on circle hooks. Adding Chum to the list (haven't tried it on them yet) would bump the krill fly salmonid count to 5. The list so far is Chinook, Coho, Steelhead, and Sockeye.

Did someone say chums in the TUALITAN, as in river? This is news to me! Please explain. Id be up for another swap. Im glad to see many have come over to the dark side! No flies, no swap! No banana!
Threats!! thats what we need! (only joking!) But limits must be set. Chums....hmmm.......

Swaps definitely operate on the honor system... that is part of what makes them fun. Seems to me if a deadline is set, whoever's flies are in at that point get swapped... no big deal, no hard feelings, no worries. lnf

Forget about gender...but 'people swaps'...what forum am I in??? TUPPERWARE??? Whats that? Home made micro brew...now that would be cool.
:hearton:
I think that the guys who don't come through should be excluded from the next swap. I've ran three swaps and the last one (summer steelhead) was the first one where everyone came through with their flies :applause: The others I ran had at least one guy who didn't follow through.
